THE QUIET TWIN

Everything Fenrys is loudly, Connall was in shadow.

Connall and Fenrys were twin sons of Doranelle nobles who went to meet Maeve at thirty. Fenrys was the one chosen for her elite war force; it was Connall that Maeve approached about the blood oath, and Connall who swore it — and then found himself compelled into her bed. He is drawn as the mirror-image the reader never fully meets: the dark to Fenrys's light, the quiet to his loud, the thoughtful to his recklessness, a large black wolf where his brother is a white one. He spends his whole existence in his twin's shadow, and the books only ever let him step out of it in order to die.

THE OATH FENRYS SWORE FOR HIM

One brother tried to take the other's place. It only doubled the chain.

When Fenrys came back and learned Maeve was using Connall as her bedroom thrall, he swore the blood oath himself and took his brother's place at her side, meaning to draw her predation off. It is the most Fenrys thing in the world, and it is a trap: instead of freeing Connall, it bound both twins into the Cadre, enslaved to the same queen. Now Maeve holds two leashes instead of one. The devotion between the brothers — the thing that should have saved them — is exactly the lever she needs, and she is patient enough to wait years to finally pull it.

THE BLACK WOLF IN THE THRONE ROOM

He'd been in the room the whole time, on four legs.

Through Aelin's captivity, Connall stays bound in Maeve's court, and in the throne room he is present as a large black wolf while his brother is forced to watch Aelin tortured. Then he shifts to human — a dark-haired echo of Fenrys, minus the wildness and mischief in his face — and confronts his twin, calling him a disgrace. It is the only real scene the reader gets of Connall alive and speaking, and it is bitter, because it is the last one. Whatever lay unresolved between the brothers goes unfinished; Maeve makes certain of that in the very next breath.

WHAT HIS DEATH TOOK

Maeve proved what the oath was by making one twin kill himself in front of the other.

To break both Aelin and Fenrys at once, Maeve uses the blood oath to compel Connall to plunge a knife into his own heart, and he bleeds out on the throne-room tiles while Fenrys — bound by his own oath — cannot move to stop it. It is the clearest thing the series ever says about what the oath actually is: not honour, ownership. The twins had shared the power to winnow, and with Connall gone Fenrys loses it entirely. Connall dies in his brother's shadow, exactly as he lived — but his death is the reason Fenrys later shatters the unbreakable oath, and that is not nothing.
