A necklace, a warning, a spent goddess
For four books it was a girl's protective necklace. It was also the one object in the world that could shut the gate — and it had been empty the whole time.
The tomb gift
Celaena follows a strange pull down a hidden passage under the glass castle to the tomb of Gavin and Elena Havilliard, and Elena's ghost gives her a blue-stone amulet with two instructions: win the King's tournament, and uncover the evil in this castle. Celaena wakes in her own bed with the necklace still clutched in her hand. She wears it openly at Yulemas, where Dorian recognizes it as the ancient Eye of Elena. Nobody in that bright hall knows they are looking at a thousand-year-old, goddess-forged relic. They think it is a pretty piece of jewelry.
It warms when the dark is close
The amulet is not decoration; it is a sensor. It warms and glows when Valg-evil is near — in the library catacombs when a cloaked creature is watching — and it goes dim and dead beside the obsidian clock tower that is strangling magic across the land. At the final duel a mark Elena burned onto Celaena's brow blazes blue while a poisoned Celaena is losing to Cain, and Elena tears open the veil to the In-Between to reach her, drawing the bloodbane out of her body so she can rise and fight on. The necklace is the tell that something is wrong, every single time.
Never take it off
Before Celaena sails for Wendlyn she tells Chaol everything about the Wyrdkeys and the king's plans, hands him the Eye, and warns him never to take it off. That instruction saves his life a book later. In the throne room, Aelin slips the amulet into Chaol's pocket without his knowing, and when the King of Adarlan swings the blow meant to end him, the Eye throws a shield of light and turns it. It shatters his spine anyway — but he leaves that room alive, and neither he nor the reader yet understands that a dead queen's necklace was the only reason.
The thing it really was
Manon is the one who finally reads it right: not the Eye of Elena but the Eye of the Goddess, its three circles the Maiden, Mother and Crone, the eye at its center holding the heart of the Darkness. Aelin and Manon step into a witch-mirror and watch Elena use that same blue stone to seal Erawan a thousand years before — and understand the protective necklace has been the spent Lock the entire time. It reforms in Aelin's hand at the final forging, does its one last job sealing the gate, and is gone.

The amulet a girl wore for protection was the single most important object in the world, and nobody who carried it knew what it was until it was almost too late.
The tomb
A strange pull leads Celaena to the tomb of Gavin and Elena beneath the glass castle, where Elena's ghost gives her a blue amulet and a warning about the evil in the castle.
Yulemas
She wears it openly at the festival, and Dorian recognizes it as the ancient Eye of Elena — the first hint the necklace is far older and stranger than it looks.
It warms in the dark
In the library catacombs the amulet warms and glows at a watching cloaked creature; near the obsidian clock tower it goes dim and dead. It is a sensor for Valg-evil.
The blue mark at the duel
Poisoned and losing to Cain, a mark Elena burned onto Celaena's brow blazes blue; Elena tears open the veil and pulls the bloodbane from her body so she can stand and fight.
Passed to Chaol
Before Wendlyn, Celaena gives Chaol the Eye and tells him everything about the Wyrdkeys, with a single instruction: never take it off.
The killing blow
In the throne room Aelin slips the amulet into Chaol's pocket; when the King of Adarlan strikes, the Eye throws a shield of light and turns the blow that was meant to end him.
The eye that wasn't the answer
A tomb riddle seems to hinge on the Eye — but the real lens is the eye-shaped pommel of Damaris. For once, the amulet was a decoy.
Eye of the Goddess
Manon reads the true iconography: Maiden, Mother, Crone, and a central eye holding the heart of the Darkness. Not the Eye of Elena — the Eye of the Goddess.
The witch-mirror
Aelin and Manon step into the mirror and watch Elena seal Erawan with this same blue stone a thousand years ago. The necklace is the original Lock, and it is spent.
Spent for good
The stone reforms in Aelin's hand at the forging at Endovier, seals the gate it was always meant to seal, and is consumed — its task a thousand years overdue and finally done.
