Fleetfoot · The full story
A thread of ordinary love across a brutal saga
The runt of a mutt litter, marked to be put down at Yulemas — and instead she becomes the one soft, ordinary thing that survives the whole war.
The runt nobody wanted
Yulemas morning: a giant bag of candy from Dorian, and then a puppy from the royal kennel — the antisocial, silver-gold runt of a mutt litter, the one the kennel meant to put down. Celaena begs Dorian to spare her, and he does. She names her Fleetfoot, for speed, and the dog imprints on her almost to the exclusion of everyone else. In a series that spends seven books taking things away, that first scene is the whole point of the dog: a life saved for no reason at all except that someone wanted it.
Who she lets touch her
Fleetfoot is cautious of strangers and hates being handled by anyone but her person — a guarded, one-owner heart. Which makes the exceptions tell you everything. Princess Nehemia, before her murder, was one of the very few she liked. Evangeline — Lysandra's rescued young ward — becomes the other, and given how little the dog trusts, that bond is its own quiet endorsement. Fleetfoot is a loyalty test the whole cast either passes or doesn't, and she is almost never wrong about a person.
Through the gate and back
When Celaena opens a Wyrdmark portal in the clock tower and something comes through, the creature seizes Fleetfoot and drags her into the other realm — but not before the dog earns a gash down her hindleg throwing herself between the thing and Celaena. Chaol goes through after her; Celaena knocks out Dorian and follows, and it is here, in the other realm, that her Fae blood and fire finally erupt. She gets Chaol and Fleetfoot out alive. A healer mends the leg. The dog keeps the scar.
Handed on, to be kept safe
Twice the war forces the same wrench. Sailing for Wendlyn, Celaena can't take her and leaves her with Dorian. Later, on the road north to Terrasen, Aelin tells a crying Evangeline that Fleetfoot won't be safe where they're going, and gives the dog into her care. Through the brutal northern winter of the last book she rides out the siege with Aedion, Lysandra and Evangeline — the ordinary heart the queen keeps sending away precisely so that it will live. She is what all of them are fighting to get back to.
A thread of ordinary love across a brutal saga
Saved on a whim one Yulemas, guarded, scarred, and handed carefully from hand to hand — the one soft thing the war never manages to take.
Yulemas
Dorian gives Celaena a bag of candy and a kennel puppy — the antisocial runt of a mutt litter, slated to be put down, spared only because Celaena begs for her life.
Fleetfoot
Celaena names the silver-gold pup for swiftness. From the start the dog imprints on her almost alone, wary of everyone else in the glass castle.
The friend before the grief
As a young dog she plays with Princess Nehemia — one of the rare few she likes and lets touch her — before Nehemia is murdered.
Through the portal
In the clock-tower confrontation, a creature drags Fleetfoot through a Wyrdmark gate into another realm, wounding her hindleg as she puts herself between it and Celaena.
The rescue
Chaol follows through the gate; Celaena knocks out Dorian and follows too, her Fae form and fire erupting for the first time, and hauls both dog and captain back before Dorian seals the portal.
The scar heals
A healer treats the gash along her hindleg and she recovers fully — carrying, from then on, the mark of the night she refused to leave.
Left with Dorian
Before sailing for Wendlyn to train with Rowan and the Fae, Celaena can't take the dog and entrusts her to Dorian's care — a wrenching goodbye for a one-owner heart.
Reunion in Rifthold
Aelin returns and the dog is hers again. Fleetfoot takes to Evangeline, Lysandra's young ward — one of the very few people she will ever let close.
North to Terrasen
She travels with the core group — Aelin, Rowan, Aedion, Lysandra, Evangeline — as they turn north to reclaim the kingdom.
Given to Evangeline
Before the war-zone swallows the road, Aelin hands a weeping Evangeline the dog's care, because Fleetfoot can't be safe where the queen is going. The ordinary thing sent away so it can survive.
The long winter
Through the brutal northern winter of the final book she waits out the siege with Aedion, Lysandra and Evangeline — the small soft life the whole war is quietly fought to protect.
