It is the same tell that marks Aelin and Aedion as royal wherever they go — the visible proof that Wendlyn's House Ashryver and Terrasen's lost queen are one family, split a generation back when Aelin's mother Evalin left the island to marry into Terrasen. At Ilium, Aelin secretly writes Galan a single short, brutal letter — sprawling capital letters, as if her temper got the better of her — invoking the bond between House Ashryver and Terrasen, reminding him she fought at Mistward for his people, and demanding he return the gods-damned favour. She encloses the coordinates of the very spot where she will later be whipped and taken. It is not a plea; it is a debt called in, in her own furious hand. By the time the reader sees the letter again it is crinkled from being read and carried across the sea — the thing that turns Wendlyn's fleet toward a war that was never officially its own.

THE ARMADA THAT ANSWERED

When the alliance was drowning, the horizon filled with Wendlyn sails.

At the climactic sea battle, with the allies desperate, Wendlyn's fleet appears — Galan at its head, come to pay the favour. He delivers Aelin's crinkled letter and her message to Aedion, and his armada is one of a cascade of reinforcements that turns the fight. Through the final war he commands on sea and land, a calm, principled, frequently-smiling counterweight to Aedion's ferocity, holding a flank beside Ansel of Briarcliff. When it is over he takes his leave of Aelin, framing Wendlyn's aid as a debt long owed and gladly paid — the old bond between the island and the reborn Terrasen restored, closed the way it opened: family answering family.
