The blade that chose
Five hundred years as the deadliest thing Maeve owned, and never once the thing she loved back.
THE CADRE
He built the leash he then spent the whole series trying to justify wearing.
For over five centuries he is the most powerful member of the Cadre and Maeve's second-in-command, and the one who does her cruelty and calls it duty because he is in love with her and she has never once loved him back. He is the man who found the grieving Rowan after Lyria and brought him into her warband — recruiting his own eventual rival. He arrives at Mistward in Heir of Fire contemptuous of Aelin and Rowan both, a walled-off killer wielding death-magic and the fade, who steps into shadow and out of it somewhere else.
OAKWALD
Then a crippled girl walked north through the forest carrying a stone she wouldn't explain.
He steals Athril's ring from Maeve and goes rogue to destroy the Wyrdkeys before she can use them, which makes him a hunted man — she sends Gavriel and Fenrys to kill him. In Oakwald he catches the Morath-scent on Elide Lochan and follows her, meaning to interrogate her. Instead they strike a bargain, his protection for her information, and end up posing as a married couple in the Carnival of Mirrors to slip past the guarded bridges. Somewhere in the weeks of it — the knife-thrower and the girl who watches everyone — the contempt turns into the first kiss at a camp.
THE SIGNAL
The single worst thing he does, he does out of love.
At the Stone Marshes he panics for Elide's safety and secretly signals Maeve, convinced only she can defeat Erawan. It summons her armada. Aelin is captured because of it, and the moment it's exposed the group's trust in him shatters. Maeve strips his blood oath and his titles for acting outside her orders — and he crawls after the captured Aelin across the sand, which everyone reads as loyalty to Maeve until Kingdom of Ash reveals he was trying to save her. Then he sets out north with a rescue party and an Elide who can barely look at him.
PERRANTH
He gives up the one thing five centuries never touched: the name.
To be allowed to stay near Elide he swears a new blood oath to Aelin, trading his autonomy for a place in Terrasen. At Anielle he is bleeding out and drowning as the dam breaks, and it is there — with nothing left to lose — that he finally says it, and Elide rides a warhorse through the flood to haul him out. They marry. And the death-god's chosen, Maeve's dark warrior, the man who owned nothing but a job, takes a mortal woman's surname: Lord Lorcan Lochan of Perranth.
The blade that chose
Every step of his redemption costs him something he swore he'd never give up.
Recruiting Rowan
He finds the grieving Rowan after Lyria's death and offers him a place in the Cadre — making himself the leash on the one Fae who will one day help unmake Maeve.
Mistward
He first appears with the Cadre when Mistward is besieged, hostile and contemptuous toward Aelin and Rowan alike.
A knife at Aelin's throat
Hunting the Wyrdkeys in Rifthold, he ambushes Aelin and demands the third key's location. She lies to his face and he believes her.
Athril's ring
He steals the ring from Maeve and deserts to destroy the keys himself, and she sends Gavriel and Fenrys to hunt him down for it.
Elide in Oakwald
He tracks the Morath-scent on a crippled girl north through the forest, meaning to interrogate her, and strikes a bargain instead.
The Carnival of Mirrors
He and Elide pose as a married couple with a travelling troupe to cross the guarded bridges, and he learns what Morath did to her.
The turn
The antagonism breaks into a first kiss at a camp; the queen's weapon starts choosing a person over the mission.
The signal
Panicking for Elide, he secretly calls Maeve, believing only she can beat Erawan. The armada comes, Aelin is taken, and his part in it is exposed.
The oath severed
Maeve strips his blood oath and titles; he crawls after the captured Aelin — to save her, not to serve — and the truth of that waits a whole book to come out.
The rescue party
He rides with Rowan, Gavriel and a furious Elide to free Aelin, and shields her from the arrows as she escapes.
The new oath
He swears the blood oath to Aelin for the freedom to stay in Terrasen — and to stay near Elide.
Anielle, and the name
Drowning at the breaking dam, he confesses; Elide rides through the flood for him; they marry and he takes the Lochan name.
What he carries
The kit of a man who owned nothing but the job.
- Athril's ringThe gold ring that grants immunity from Valg possession. He steals it from Maeve and goes rogue — the theft that makes him hunted, and the ring that later helps Dorian break a Valg collar.
- The Cadre tattooThe mark of Maeve's blood-sworn, worn for five hundred years. Almost everything the series does to him is, one way or another, about getting it off.
- The fadeHis gift from the death-god: he steps into shadow and out of it elsewhere, and can hold a line of darkness against five hundred ilken. He spends the last book using it to protect instead of kill.
