THE FAIR ONE

In the legend she's the youngest and softest of three. Only two of the three were ever real.

In the tale Emrys and Rowan tell, the immortal Fae were ruled by three Sister-Queens: dark Maeve, who could hold no single form; cunning Mora, who took the shape of a great hawk; and Mab, the youngest and fairest, who wore the shape of a regal white swan. Mab is the maiden of the three, the gentlest of the legend. What the reader learns only late, and what Mab herself never knew, is that there were only ever two true sisters — Maeve, a Valg queen, carved herself into their memories as an eldest sibling who was never born. Mab spent her whole life believing in a sister who was really a wound in her mind.

THE QUEEN WHO CHOSE TO DIE

She gave up the one thing every Fae is desperate to keep.

Mab fell in love with a mortal human prince — a match Maeve disapproved of — and did the near-unthinkable for an immortal: she surrendered her Fae immortality to live and die within a human lifespan at his side. It was love, and it was also an escape from Maeve's wrath. Together she and her prince founded the Kingdom of Wendlyn and the royal House Ashryver that still rules it, the island realm across the sea where Celaena is sent. A full-blooded Fae queen chose a single mortal span over forever — and in doing it, seeded a bloodline that would matter enormously a thousand years down the line.

THE GODDESS SHE BECAME

Die a beloved queen, and enough generations will start calling you a god.

After her mortal death, Mab's descendants and worshippers folded her into Deanna — Lady of the Hunt, goddess of the moon and maidenhood and water. It is not a clean origin story: Rowan is careful to note that Deanna was an older goddess first, and that mortals only draped Mab's traits over her in recent generations, crowning a dead queen among the divine. Still, when the reader meets the moon-cold, arrow-swift Deanna later in the series, they are looking at what a grieving people made of the swan-queen who gave up eternity — the softest of the three sisters, remembered as a huntress.

THE EYES SHE LEFT

Her real immortality is a colour that keeps turning up in the people who matter.

Mab's most durable legacy isn't a throne or a temple — it's a face. The Ashryver eyes, turquoise with a core of gold, run only in her line, and across seven books they are the unmistakable tell of true royal blood: the thing that marks Evalin, then Aelin, then Aedion as what they are. She passed down water magic and the swan-line shift as well, and canon is precise that a descendant who inherited her gifts in full would win back the immortality Mab surrendered. The queen who chose to die keeps looking out of her heirs' faces, still recognisably herself, generation after generation.
