The knocker that talks back

Behind the tapestry in her bedroom, down a passage that forks three ways, Celaena finds Elena and Gavin's tomb — and a bronze skull door-knocker that startles her by asking whether she means to knock. Magic vanished from Erilea a decade ago, so how is he awake and mouthy? Because his life-source is OLD magic, he says, the kind the disappearance never touched. He's been watching the murders unfold in the castle above the whole time, and he is deeply, sardonically unimpressed with all of it.

Forged from a witch's gift

The full backstory lands in Empire of Storms. After Elena gave up her immortal life for Gavin and the pair died, Brannon built their tomb with his own hands — and forged Mort from metal the witch Rhiannon Crochan gave him. She brushed a hand across the dead king's cheek and left. Brannon carved the walls with riddles and Wyrdmarks meant for a future fire-wielding heir. Mort is the guardian he left bolted to the door, to make certain that heir — Aelin, eventually — actually did the work.

The exposition engine

For all the smart-aleck routine, Mort is where half the plot gets unlocked. He warns that Cain and the ridderak were only the beginning of a greater evil. He relays the messages Elena dictates. He confirms the Eye of Elena has power but flatly refuses to say how — she has to earn it. He recites Brannon's riddle: three Wyrdkeys, one Wyrdgate, and power enough to rule this world and others. And he laughs at every wrong answer Celaena tries, dancing around her questions, enjoying himself far too much for a door.

The empty crown

When Celaena finally cracks the tomb's riddle — an anagram pointing to the first Wyrdkey hidden beneath the blue jewel in Elena's stone crown — Mort confirms it, and she works the tiara open. The compartment is empty. He explains the King of Adarlan found that key years ago and used its power to suppress magic across all of Erilea. That single reveal reframes the entire world: the missing magic was never a mystery of nature. It was a man, and a key, and a door-knocker who knew the whole time.
