Nehemia Ytger · The full story

The one who named it

Sent north to learn manners. Already the only person in the castle who could read the old magic.

The princess who was pretending

She arrives at the glass castle sent by her father, the King of Eyllwe, ostensibly to learn northern customs. She lets the court believe she has no common tongue and needs tutoring in it. Celaena — who speaks Eyllwe fluently — is assigned to teach her. The lessons are a cover for both of them, and become the only real friendship either has in Rifthold. Later, found alone in the royal library at night reading a high-level text in flawless common tongue, she stops bothering to pretend.

The marks

On Samhuinn she and Celaena see Cain drawing symbols in the dirt, and Nehemia names them: Wyrdmarks. An ancient written magic that Adarlan has made a capital crime, and she can read it. What she does with that is quiet and constant. She chalks protective wards on the floor underneath Celaena's bed without telling her. When the ridderak — the thing Cain summons through a Wyrdgate — savages her, Nehemia chants until glowing marks close the wounds. During the championship duel, while Cain is pulling creatures out of other realms, she is working the marks that let Elena through.

The argument

In Crown of Midnight she teaches openly — Celaena learns to read the marks and then to use them — and they talk about the rebellion as equals. Then she asks for the one thing Celaena will not give: swear to help free Eyllwe. Celaena refuses, afraid of what more rebellion costs, and Nehemia calls her the king's puppet and a coward. It is the last serious conversation they have. About a week before her death she walks out of Archer Finn's rebel movement, because she will not do what he is prepared to do.

The murder

While Celaena is away pulling Chaol out of a trap Archer set, the assassin Grave breaks into Nehemia's chambers and kills her and her guards. It was designed. Archer Finn arranged it specifically to break Celaena open and point her at the king. It works — she finds the body, and it takes Dorian's magic erupting for the first time to stop her killing Chaol over it.

What she leaves

Celaena hunts Grave down and kills him, then learns the shape of the thing: that Nehemia had understood the risk and stayed anyway. At the tomb she sings an ancient Eyllwe song and swears a blood oath over the body — to free Eyllwe, and to answer for her. Grieving and untrained, she later draws an archway of Wyrdmarks in her own blood to call Nehemia back, and exposes what she is doing it. The oath holds. As temporary regent in Queen of Shadows, Aelin frees every slave in Adarlan, and it traces directly back to a promise made over this body.

The one who named it

  1. Sent to Rifthold

Her father, the King of Eyllwe, sends her to the glass castle, ostensibly to learn northern customs. The court reads her as decorative.

  2. The lessons

Celaena, fluent in Eyllwe, is set to tutor her in the common tongue. The lessons are a cover for both of them and become a real friendship.

  3. The library, at night

Found alone reading a high-level text in flawless common tongue, with a Wyrdmark nearby. She stops pretending.

  4. Samhuinn

They see Cain drawing symbols in the dirt. Nehemia names them: Wyrdmarks, an ancient written magic that Adarlan kills people for knowing.

  5. Wards under the bed

She chalks protective marks on the floor beneath Celaena's bed to shield her from the thing Cain is summoning, and does not mention it.

  6. The ridderak

After the creature savages Celaena, Nehemia chants until glowing Wyrdmarks spread across her and the wounds close.

  7. The duel

While Cain pulls beasts out of other realms mid-championship, she works the marks that open the way for Elena to intervene.

  8. Teaching openly

In Crown of Midnight she teaches Celaena to read and use the marks, and they discuss the rebellion as confidantes.

  9. The riddle

They share Elena's tomb and work together on the riddle tied to the Wyrdkeys' location.

  10. Coward

She demands Celaena swear to help free Eyllwe. Celaena refuses, and Nehemia calls her the king's puppet. It is their last real conversation.

  11. Walking out

About a week before her death she quits Archer Finn's rebel movement, because she will not do what he intends to do.

  12. Grave

While Celaena is away rescuing Chaol from Archer's trap, the assassin breaks into her chambers and kills her and her guards.

  13. Designed

Archer Finn arranged it precisely to break Celaena open and aim her at the king. It works exactly as intended.

  14. The grief

Celaena finds the body and attacks Chaol for not preventing it. Dorian's magic erupts for the first time in his life to stop the blow.

  15. The song, and the oath

At the tomb Celaena sings an ancient Eyllwe song and swears a blood oath over her body: free Eyllwe, and answer for her.

  16. Kept

As temporary regent in Queen of Shadows, Aelin frees every slave in Adarlan. It traces straight back to this promise.

What she carried

Hers

  • The WyrdmarksAn ancient written magic, outlawed on pain of death, which she could read and teach — and which Eyllwe kept alive while Adarlan burned it out of everywhere else.
  • The wards under the bedChalked on the floor of somebody else's room, in secret, for somebody who did not know to be grateful yet.
  • The blood oath over her bodyNot hers. Sworn by Celaena at the tomb — and kept, years later, by a queen freeing every slave in Adarlan.

In their own words

“Sometimes, the wicked will tell us things just to confuse us — to haunt our thoughts long after we've faced them.”

“Names are not important. It's what lies inside of you that matters.”
