He was the khagan's second son, never meant to inherit. Then he chose a foreign commoner for his empress — and his father named him Heir over the elder brother who'd done everything right.
THE SECOND SON ON THE RUK
Chaol only genuinely likes two of the six royal siblings. Sartaq is one of them.
Sartaq is the second-eldest of the khagan's six children and commander of the rukhin, the northern aerial cavalry, riding out of the Eridun hearth-clan around the Tavan Mountains. He meets Nesryn Faliq in Antica and offers to walk her to her cousins; soon he is taking her up on Kadara — his golden, white-chested ruk, large enough to carry off cattle — every single morning after breakfast. It is the whole slow-burn in miniature: a prince who leads with kindness, and a captain from the north who does not trust that kindness yet.
THE HEARTH AND THE OLD WAR
His people have been fighting the Valg since long before the north had a name for it.
Sartaq brings Nesryn three weeks north to his clan, to his hearth-mother Houlun — who leads the Eridun and keeps its legends — and his hearth-sister Borte, the rukhin heir. Houlun tells the story under the mountains: a Wyrdgate tore open here in the ancient past, the kharankui and the Valg poured through, and the Fae came and taught the first ruks and their riders how to fight them. The rukhin aren't a colourful side-trip in the sixth book. They are a thousand-year-old front line in the exact war Aelin is bleeding for up north.
THE CONFESSION UNDER THE ROCK
He told her he loved her before he was ever meant to survive telling her.
Chasing the stolen ruk hatchlings into the Dagul Fells, Sartaq and Nesryn find a spider-tower over a dungeon of still-sharp Fae weapons, and a captured kharankui gives up the secret that reframes the whole series — that Maeve is a Valg queen, not Fae. Then the spiders close in. Pinned and bleeding under a rockslide, Sartaq confesses that he had loved Nesryn before he ever met her, from the stories he'd heard of her — moments before the kharankui drag him under. Borte comes screaming out of the sky with fire arrows, and he lives to say it again.
A THOUSAND RIDERS, AND HER
He passed the elder brother, and he picked the guard captain's daughter.
After the mountains, his father names Sartaq Heir to the khaganate — over the elder brother Arghun, who had played every rule right — and pledges a thousand rukhin to Aelin's war. Sartaq commits to fly them north whether his father wills it or not, and he names Nesryn, a commoner-born Adarlanian captain's daughter, his future empress, breaking the dynastic-marriage tradition on purpose. At Anielle he and Nesryn spot the dam sabotage from the air; over Orynth the ruks fight beside the Crochan witches with him leading from the front. The soft prince turned out to be the one who bet the empire on love and won.

Meeting Nesryn
He meets Nesryn Faliq in Antica and walks her to her cousins, signalling an interest she doesn't yet return.

Every morning after breakfast he takes her up on his golden ruk — the pivot of the whole slow-burn.
North to the hearth
Three weeks north to the Tavan clans, to his hearth-mother Houlun and hearth-sister Borte.
Houlun's legend
Houlun tells how a Wyrdgate opened here, the Valg poured through, and the Fae taught the first ruks to fight.
The stolen hatchlings
The kharankui are stirring and stealing ruk eggs — the threat that sends them into the Dagul Fells.
Maeve unmasked
A captured kharankui gives up the secret: Maeve is a Valg queen, not Fae at all.
Trapped, and rescued
Pinned under a rockslide as the spiders take him, he is saved when Borte arrives with fire arrows.
Named Heir
His father names him Heir to the khaganate over the elder brother Arghun, and pledges a thousand riders.
He chooses Nesryn
He names a commoner-born captain's daughter his future empress, breaking the alliance-marriage tradition.
The dam at Anielle
From the air he and Nesryn spot Morath's sabotage of the dam holding back Silver Lake.
Over Orynth
He leads the rukhin from the front in the final battle, fighting beside the Crochan witches.
