Arobynn's house

The Guild is run out of the Assassins' Keep in Rifthold by Arobynn Hamel, who styles himself King of the Assassins. He found an orphaned child near the frozen Avery after Terrasen fell, renamed her Celaena Sardothien, and trained her from nothing into Adarlan's Assassin. That is the house's whole model in one story: it takes people with nowhere left to go and makes them the best in the world, then keeps the receipt. Every kindness is a debt. Ben, Arobynn's gentler Second and the house medic, was the only softness in the place — and he died on another assassin's failed job before the series even begins.

The debt runs everything

The house's real logic is on display at Skull's Bay. Arobynn sends Celaena and Sam Cortland to broker a slave-trade deal; they free two hundred slaves and wreck it instead. His answer is to summon his enforcers — Tern, Mullin, Harding — and beat Celaena nearly to death while Tern and Mullin hold Sam and force him to watch. Later he assigns her to kill Doneval, framed as stopping a blackmailer, when Doneval is really an abolitionist and the true client is buying her own slave-trade deal. The Guild is not a brotherhood of killers. It is a debt-collection business that happens to use knives.

He owns what he pays for

Celaena sells her most prized horse to clear Sam's debt so the two of them can leave together — and Arobynn, smiling, tells her he used that very gold to win the courtesan Lysandra at her Bidding. That is the cruelty at the heart of the place: it turns love into leverage and freedom into a transaction. When Celaena and Sam finally walk away to build a life, Arobynn cannot allow it. He conspires with Rourke Farran, who tortures and murders Sam; Celaena is captured going after them and sentenced to the salt mines of Endovier, the fall the whole series begins from.

The house outlives the master

Arobynn's own bodyguard Wesley avenges Sam by killing Farran, then writes Celaena a warning letter — and Arobynn murders him for acting first. The debt finally comes due in Queen of Shadows: Lysandra, who loved Wesley, slits Arobynn's throat in his sleep with the knife he kept under her pillow, and Aelin gives her the kill. But the Guild does not die with him. Aelin sells the Keep and the whole business to Tern, Harding and Mullin, the surviving enforcers, who become the new Kings of the Assassins. Same house. Same debts. New owners.
