THE SIXTH NAME

Every list of the Cadre ends on him, and then moves on.

Vaughan took Maeve's blood oath before the series begins, one of the six Fae warriors bound to obey the queen of Doranelle — the roster the reader learns as Rowan, Lorcan, Gavriel, Fenrys, Connall and Vaughan. His secondary form is an osprey, which is the detail that decides most of his story: whenever there is rough, far terrain to cross, he is the one sent, because he can fly it. He is not a lesser warrior. He is the one the narrative keeps posting to the edges of the map, so the reader always knows the Cadre is six without ever quite getting to know the sixth.

THE ONE TIME HE SHOWS UP

He came to the fight — and didn't spare a glance for the girl burning a path to the gate.

His one real on-page appearance is at Mistward, in Heir of Fire. Rowan calls the Cadre to help defend the fortress against the Valg, and Vaughan answers, dropping out of the sky in osprey form to join the battle — an act that risks Maeve's anger, since they come for Rowan rather than at her order. But as Celaena burns herself hollow clearing a path through the Valg dark so the Cadre can reach the gates, Vaughan does not pause, does not look at her, does not check whether she needs help. He goes straight for his objective, and it earns Rowan's cold irritation. Singular focus, no warmth — that is the whole sketch of him.

SENT NORTH, AND GONE

The war happens; he is always somewhere else.

In Empire of Storms he never physically appears. Gavriel and Fenrys explain that Maeve has scattered the Cadre to hunt the deserter Lorcan, and Vaughan drew the far northern reaches — the harshest ground, handed to him precisely because the osprey can manage it. Through Kingdom of Ash he stays off the page entirely, while every other Cadre member converges on the central war. The others wonder aloud what he is doing, and whether he is staying away on purpose. Of all six, he is the one whose story is mostly the shape of his absence — a warrior defined by where he isn't.

FREED WITHOUT A SCENE

The chain comes off him too — he's just not in the room when it does.

Fenrys breaks his oath to save Aelin from Cairn and swears a new one to her; Rowan, Lorcan and Gavriel are released when Maeve dies at Orynth. Vaughan — the last still bound, still absent — is freed by that same death, entirely off the page. At the very end, the survivors, Rowan and Lorcan and Fenrys, remark that they ought to go track him down, since no one ever found him. It is the final line the series gives him: a loose thread the others intend to chase. Held longest, seen least, and released into a story that has to go looking for where he went.
