THE ENFORCER OF THE KEEP

Arobynn's shadow, and no friend of Celaena's.

Wesley was the personal bodyguard of Arobynn Hamel, King of the Assassins, a fixture of the Keep in Rifthold through all of Celaena's years there — a silent, controlled, deadly presence with no magic and no need of it, dangerous enough to enforce for the deadliest guild in the city. Canon barely describes him; he has no recorded face, no family, no birthplace, only a role and a loyalty. He and Celaena circled each other with open dislike — he once flatly threatened to kill her if she ever put Arobynn in danger. Whatever conscience he had, he kept it as quiet as everything else about him.

THE FRIEND HE KEPT SECRET

Under the silence, he was Sam's friend and Lysandra's lover.

The quiet enforcer had a private life the Keep never saw. Wesley was secretly a friend to Sam Cortland — the gentlest person in that house of knives — and secretly the lover of the courtesan Lysandra. So when Arobynn's betrayal surfaces, it lands on him personally. Arobynn conspires with the underworld's Rourke Farran in a scheme that gets Sam captured, tortured and killed, and Celaena sold to the salt mines of Endovier — all because, as the reason finally comes out, Arobynn does not like to share his belongings. Wesley, close enough as bodyguard to learn it, is horrified. The man paid to protect Arobynn becomes the one person in the Keep who turns against him.

WHAT HE DID ABOUT IT

He avenged Sam himself, and tried to keep Celaena out of the same trap.

Wesley does not grieve quietly. He hunts down Rourke Farran — the man who tortured Sam — and kills him, personally, pre-empting the revenge Celaena is walking straight toward, because Farran was lying in wait to snare her exactly as he had snared Sam. Then he writes her a letter laying out everything he knows of Arobynn's plans, entrusting it to Lysandra to put in her hands, and prepares to travel to Endovier to free Celaena himself. Every one of these is a betrayal of the master he served for years, and every one is aimed at protecting the two people Arobynn used. The enforcer spends the last of himself undoing his own king's cruelty.

SPIKED ON THE GATES

Arobynn's answer is the whole engine of the series in one corpse.

Arobynn does not forgive the killing of Farran or the betrayal underneath it. He has Wesley murdered and his body spiked on the gates of Farran's house as a public warning — struck down before he can reach Endovier. It happens roughly nine months before Celaena hears any of it, unspooled later through Chaol's investigation. Wesley's death is a small, brutal proof of what Arobynn is, and his choices ripple outward: the warning that helps Celaena, the vengeance that spares her Farran, the betrayal that later feeds Lysandra's own reckoning with the King of Assassins. The loyal enforcer's one disloyal act is the most honourable thing in the book.
