Professor of wielding · fire-wielder · Breugan's rider · the man who teaches you to control the thing that could kill you
Professor Carr
The first time we meet him he snaps a cadet's neck for reading minds. That's Carr in one gesture: no warmth, no cruelty for its own sake, just the cold institutional math of what Navarre allows to keep living.
The wielding professor — a fire-wielder bonded to the orange daggertail Breugan — who drills cadets in shields, control, and burnout, and took over Violet's training when she started throwing lightning in her sleep.
The instructor · What he teaches
Nurture your signet, build your shields, don't burn out.
Carr runs wielding — the class where cadets learn to grow their signets, hold mental shields, and manage the burnout that comes from overspending their power. Clinical and imposing, with none to spare for encouragement. He isn't a lightning wielder himself, but he took Violet on anyway and drilled her in rapid output and control until she could survive her own gift.
The math · What he cares about
He values her as a weapon, and he'll say so to her face.
Carr enforces Navarre's capital ban on intrinsics — the neck-snap when a cadet is outed as a mind-reader is his hand, not a subordinate's — and he treats Violet as a strategic asset first and a person a distant second. Which is exactly why, when Varrish tortures her toward burnout, Carr intervenes: not out of care, but because losing her loses Xaden, Tairn, and Sgaeyl with her. Cold, and useful for it.
