The Kingdom

Navarre

Dragons, wards, and a war college that graduates its kids straight into a war it swears isn't happening. Navarre is the kingdom we'd bleed for — and the one that lied to every last one of us about the venin.

The kingdom of dragon riders — and the lie under the wards.

The kingdom Violet swears to defend — and the one that's been lying to her the whole time. The larger of the Continent's two powers: six mountain provinces behind a ward that's held six hundred years, one crown in Calldyr, one war college at Basgiath forging every officer it fields. The official story is a proud dragon-and-rider kingdom locked in a four-hundred-year war with Poromiel's gryphon fliers. The part they keep out of the Codex: the wards don't reach Tyrrendor, the venin are real, and the crown has spent centuries burying both to keep its people obedient. A home worth bleeding for, built on a lie worth burning down — and we'd still bleed for it. We know exactly how that sounds.

Navarre's Own

The people the kingdom made.

A rider it couldn't kill, a general who ran the machine, and two sons of families the crown tried to erase.

THE RIDERVioletThe general's fragile scribe daughter, marched onto the parapet to die quietly. She out-thought the deadliest quadrant in Navarre instead, bonded two dragons when the rule says you get none, and turned the scholar's brain the kingdom trained on her into the weapon aimed straight at its biggest lie. Fragile was never the weakness.Enter Violet →
THE MARKED ONEXadenDuke of Tyrrendor, wingleader, and the son of the man Navarre executed for telling the truth about the venin. The crown branded him at sixteen and conscripted him to compete or die. Rebuilding Aretia into the war Navarre won't admit is real is, frankly, the least it owes him.Enter Xaden →
THE GENERALLilithGeneral of Navarre, storm-wielder, and the mother who signed the order that sent her most breakable child into the Riders Quadrant without a goodbye. The reread is where you find out that was love — the coldest, most calculated kind in the series. She spent her own life into the wardstone to keep the kingdom standing.Enter Lilith →
THE HIDDEN PRINCEAaricKing Tauri's son, enrolled at the deadliest school in Navarre under a name he invented on the spot, because a crown is exactly the kind of help he didn't want. Violet clocked the Tauri-green eyes in about a second. A prince who'd rather earn a place than inherit one — and the quiet card the whole endgame swings on.Enter Aaric →
THE ONE WHO CAME BACKBrennanViolet's not-dead brother, the mender everyone buried six years ago, running the Revolution out of Aretia the entire time. Navarre thinks it killed him. Navarre is wrong about a lot of things, and this is only the start of the list.Enter Brennan →

The places that made it.

Carved into mountains, held together by spite and load-bearing history.

Basgiath War College

Basgiath War College

The War College

Four quadrants carved into a mountain, one wet parapet to cross or die on, and a Codex that files 'only the strong survive' as policy — not a slogan. Every officer Navarre fields is forged here: riders, scribes, healers, infantry. It's the place that keeps trying to kill Violet and the only one that ever made her a weapon.

The Vale

The Vale

The Dragons' Domain

The forested valley behind Basgiath where the dragons actually live and Threshing plays out every October first. Sacred, sovereign, off-limits — you walk in on foot and hope something enormous decides you're worth keeping. The wardstone at its edge is the load-bearing wall of the whole kingdom.

Tyrrendor

Tyrrendor

The Rebel Province

Navarre's largest, southernmost, most rebellious corner — last to kneel, first to burn, still carving its runes into the stone like it never agreed to forget. Home of House Riorson and the Great Betrayal the crown would rather you didn't ask about.

Enter Tyrrendor
Aretia

Aretia

The Rebel City

Tyrrendor's capital, razed by dragonfire and struck off the map — so of course it's still standing, rebuilt in secret, arming the war Navarre swears isn't coming. The forge that smelts venin-killing blades runs here.

Calldyr

Calldyr

The Royal Seat

The smallest, westernmost province and the crown's own ground — Calldyr City, where King Tauri holds court and the leaders of the Tyrrish Rebellion were brought to burn in front of their children. All the opulence, none of the fighting.

Resson

Resson

The Border

Across the Poromish border, the trading post where the war stopped being a rumour and started taking people we loved. Where Navarre's riders and Poromiel's fliers first fought venin side by side — and where Navarre chose to file a massacre as 'unrest' and quietly move the trade route.

We're Caffeine and Curses. The Library started as my design research — I can't put Navarre on a shirt without knowing the scribes wear cream and the riders wear black — so we keep the notes here where everyone can use them. The pages are fan-made, not official; the licensed designs are in the shop.

What is Navarre?

Violet's kingdom — the western power on the map, dragons and riders, one crown and one very deadly war college. It's the 'good guys' side of a four-hundred-year war, or it would be, if its whole reason for fighting weren't a story the crown invented. Read past book one and you'll know Navarre as the home you love and the institution you don't trust, at the exact same time. That tension is the entire point.

Why is Navarre at war?

Officially, a four-hundred-year grudge with Poromiel and its gryphon fliers across the eastern border. Actually? Both kingdoms are fighting the same hidden enemy — the venin and their wyvern — and Navarre's crown would rather keep the old war running than admit the real one exists. Resson is where that lie stops holding.
