Marbh

Orange daggertail · name means 'dead' · the mount all of Navarre buried

Marbh

The dragon at the heart of Fourth Wing's best-kept secret — wounded, hidden, and very much alive.

The orange daggertail bonded to Brennan Sorrengail: reported killed at Aretia, then concealed in the valley caves for five years while a whole family grieved a lie.

The faked death

Buried on paper. Breathing in a cave.

At the Battle of Aretia, Fen Riorson's arrow fells Brennan, and Navarre closes the book on rider and dragon both. The truth: Marbh took wounds but lived, and other Aretian dragons hid the pair while the Sorrengails mourned an empty grave.

The hidden years

Five years underground, on purpose.

Concealed in a network of valley caves, Brennan builds a revolution under the alias Aisereigh with his 'dead' dragon at his side. The whole hidden Tyrrish resistance runs, in part, on a dragon the entire kingdom had already written off.

The name

Named for the lie.

Marbh means dead — a pointed, on-the-nose joke that only lands once you know the secret. A dragon called for a death that never actually took, walking around very much unkilled.

Its people

The rider it hid with, and the sisters who mourned them both.

The faked death

One long withheld breath.

Marbh's arc is a secret held for five years. Struck down at Aretia in the record books, alive in a cave in fact — the mount whose survival quietly rewrites a family's whole grief the moment it finally breaks.

  1. 01

    Aretia

During the Tyrrish rebellion, Brennan and Marbh are reported killed — Fen Riorson's arrow, and a name added to the death roll. Navarre believes it. So does the family.

  2. 02

    The caves

Wounded but alive, Marbh is hidden with Brennan by other Aretian dragons, deep in the valley. For five years the pair are a secret kept from the people who loved them most.

  3. 03

    The reveal

In Fourth Wing's final pages the secret breaks: the brother, and the mount, that everyone buried are standing there alive — and every grief the Sorrengails carried has to be read again from the start.
