Gryphon

Poromiel's mounts · eagle-and-lion, not dragon · the enemy cavalry that became the alliance

Gryphon

The fliers' mounts, and for most of the war the thing Navarre was raised to hate. Then the venin gave both kingdoms a bigger enemy, and the gryphons ended up on our side of the wards.

Eagle-and-lion hybrids out of Poromiel — smaller, earthier, more raptor than dragon. They bond a flier for life, grant lesser gifts instead of signets, and are said to die together with the one they choose.

Not dragons · What they are

Earthbound raptors, not smooth menace.

Gryphons are smaller and rougher than Navarrian dragons — beak, talons, a lion's tail — and they channel lesser gifts to their fliers, often mindwork, rather than the world-bending signets a dragon grants. Poromiel's answer to the Riders Quadrant, and for generations its sworn opposite.

The Harvest · How the bond is earned

You jump. You hold. You hope.

A flier earns a gryphon by leaping from the cliffs of Cliffsbane onto a passing drift and holding on until one bonds — a tie held for life, gryphon and flier said to die together. Across Iron Flame and Onyx Storm the venin turn these old enemies into the allies at Aretia. The cavalry we were taught to fear, fighting beside us.

Their world

The kingdom they answer to, and the war that changed sides.
