The wingleader who ran the Codex like a weapon · Dain's rigid ally · the zealot her own dragon's fire ended
Amber Mavis
The rules-obsessed wingleader who couldn't stand that Violet beat the Gauntlet on wording instead of muscle — and spent the year using the Codex to try to correct the universe's mistake. Turns out the stickler for the rules was the one letting assassins through the door.
Third Wing's wingleader in Violet's first year and a close ally of Dain Aetos: strawberry-blonde, blue-eyed, Tyrrish, bonded to the orange daggertail Claidh. A zealot exposed as a traitor — and executed by dragonfire for it.
The zealot
Rules as a cudgel, aimed at one cadet.
Amber is what happens when a rule-follower meets someone smarter than the rules. Violet gets around the Gauntlet on the exact wording of the Codex, and Amber — rigid, righteous, wingleader of Third Wing — takes it as a personal affront and spends the year trying to litigate her out of existence. She's the small-minded authority the college is full of: certain that 'only the strong survive' is a moral law, and certain she's the one who gets to decide who counts as strong.
The traitor
The one crying 'rules' was holding the door.
The hypocrisy is the whole point. The wingleader who lectured hardest about the Codex is the one who let unbonded assassins into Violet's room — and it comes apart when Tairn projects the memory of the attack for a quorum of wingleaders to see. Convicted unanimously, Amber is executed by dragonfire, defiant even then, calling it no crime to cull 'the weakest rider.' She dies exactly as sure of herself as she lived, and exactly as wrong.
