The crown prince who chose Infantry on purpose · the first love and worst instinct · the ex we were all relieved she outgrew
Halden Tauri
The boy Violet loved back when she still thought her future was soft and safe and full of books. He cheated on her with one of his own instructors, never went near a dragon, and swaggers back into Onyx Storm certain the throne still makes him the main character.
King Tauri's eldest and heir, Aaric's brother, crown prince of Navarre — Infantry-trained, no bond, no signet, and a smirk that has aged worse than the summer it came from.
Who he is · The safe choice she outgrew
First love, first red flag.
Halden is the before — the well-mannered prince Violet loved when she still believed she'd live quietly as a scribe — and the reread makes his whole appeal curdle. He was easy to love because nothing was ever asked of him, and he cheated the moment being adored got inconvenient. Every reader clocks it at once: he's the life she'd have shrunk into, and the parapet is the thing that saved her from it.
The Infantry prince · Trained to risk nothing
A crown that never had to bleed for anything.
Set him beside his brother and the whole family fault line shows. Aaric invents a name and takes the deadliest odds in Navarre precisely so a place can't be handed to him; Halden takes Infantry and the guarantee that comes with royal blood. He's the exact version of Tauri privilege Aaric is running from — comfortable, unearned, and completely sure it's owed.
Onyx Storm · The problem in a nice coat
Back, and somehow worse.
He resurfaces as the crown's political face and immediately makes himself Violet's problem — wedging into the isles mission, throwing his weight around badly, and still carrying a torch he thinks entitles him to something. Short-tempered, out of his depth, and lined up on his father's side of the war, he's the foil Xaden doesn't even have to try against. We are watching this one with narrowed eyes.
