General of all Navarre · the foresight that never loses · Codagh's rider · the man the marked ones can never let see them coming
General Augustine Melgren
The reason Navarre almost never loses a battle is that its top general already knows how it ends before it begins. The reason the marked ones are still breathing is a blind spot he carved into himself and doesn't know is there.
Augustine Melgren — Commanding General of Navarre, King Tauri's indispensable weapon, rider of the black dragon Codagh, and the architect of the executions that accidentally armed the rebellion against him.
The war machine · Who he is
The most dangerous man in Navarre wears the most medals.
Commanding General of the entire kingdom, King Tauri's right hand, bonded to Codagh — the oldest, rarest, largest dragon in the Vale. Melgren is Navarre's military genius made flesh: cold, unhurried, used to being the smartest threat in any room. When he walks into Basgiath, even the professors straighten.
Battle foresight · His signet
He sees who wins before the first blade is drawn.
His signet lets him watch the outcome of a battle before it happens — which is why the crown treats his counsel as gospel and why meeting Navarre head-on is close to suicide. You don't out-plan a man who has already seen the plan work. You only beat him by being something his sight can't resolve.
The one thing he can't see · His blind spot
He built his own blind spot and branded it onto children.
When Melgren's dragonfire executed the rebellion's leaders, the protective runes they'd carved bloomed onto their 107 orphaned children — and those same relics are the one thing that scrambles his foresight. He can't see the marked ones coming. The man who ordered the atrocity is blind to the rebellion it created. The irony writes itself.
His war
The dragon, the fire, and the children he can't see.
