The culture

Up at five, sworn to silence, quietly running the country.

Scribes register every conscript, log every death, read the roll each morning, and decide which front-line attacks make Battle Brief and which quietly vanish. Sumerton got erased before breakfast. The kingdom's whole official memory is written by hand, in this room.

The record

The most dangerous weapon in the war is who gets to write it down.

Under Curator Markham the Archives stopped being preservation and became propaganda — venin filed under 'never happened', the dark wielders erased, the true history of the wards locked in a vault only royal blood can open. Once you catch them doing it, you never trust the page again.

The cost

It costs your silence — you become the lie you file.

The scribes didn't lose the truth about venin; they curated it out, one classified scroll at a time, and swore the oath that keeps it buried. That's the price of the cream: complicity dressed as sacred trust. Jesinia paid it back the only way that mattered — she started handing the forbidden things over.

The Scribe Quadrant doesn't kill you to test you — it swears you to silence and hands you the truth to keep. That turns out to be the more dangerous deal. Here's the year that makes a keeper of the record, and the crack that lets one turn traitor.

The exam
No parapet — a written entrance exam on Conscription Day: the history of Navarre and its long war with Poromiel. Pass it and you trade a dragon for a pen.

Five a.m.
Scribes rise before dawn to archive duty — registering conscripts, logging front-line dispatches, reading the roll of the dead each morning. The kingdom's memory, kept by hand.

The oath and the stacks
You take the oath of silence and earn the run of the Archives: twenty-foot shelves, mage-light, the ten-foot door that seals airtight at seven. Get caught inside after it locks and it's the last thing you do.

The record
Trusted with the whole record, you learn what's kept and what's buried — Sumerton wiped before breakfast, venin filed under 'never happened'. Keeping the story means keeping the lie.

You graduate a keeper of Navarre's official truth. Or, like Jesinia, you decide the truth belongs to the people it protects — and start handing the forbidden things over.
