Professor of Dragonkind · Navarre's foremost dragon scholar · Smachd's rider · the closest thing the faculty has to a friend
Professor Kaori
If you've ever read a Fourth Wing chapter epigraph, you've read Kaori. He wrote the field guide the whole series quotes — and he's the one professor who genuinely thinks a dragon's choice belongs to the dragon.
Colonel Kaori — the illusionist who can throw a living dragon across a lecture hall, author of the in-world Field Guide to Dragonkind, and the teacher who defended Violet's impossible dual bond on principle.
The scholar · What he does
He can show you a dragon without one in the room.
Kaori teaches first-years to name breeds, read temperaments, and survive their first Threshing — and his Illusionist signet lets him throw an image straight from his mind so the whole hall sees a living dragon, a map, a battle formation. He did his four years at the front before the college decided his mind was too valuable to risk deployed. A scholar who earned the classroom.
The principle · Where he stands
Humans don't get to decide who dragons choose.
When Varrish tries to treat Violet's dual bond as a problem to be solved, Kaori is the one who defends it — not because he likes her odds, but because he genuinely believes dragon autonomy outranks human convenience, which is rare in a college built on human dominance. His scholarly hunger can cloud his judgement, but his instincts about dragons almost never miss.
His subject
The bond he studies and the student who broke his textbook.
