Navarre calls it treason. Tyrrendor calls it saying the quiet part out loud. Either way it ended in dragonfire — and the reread is where you find out the traitors were the only ones telling the truth.

The apostasy

Two names for the same fire, and only one side used the honest one.

Navarre files it as rebellion; Tyrrendor calls it the apostasy. Fen Riorson led the province to break away, and the deeper aim was never just a border — it was to stop pretending the venin weren't real and fight them out loud. The last province to kneel refused to keep the crown's lie.

Aretia

They didn't just win. They erased the evidence.

The rebellion is crushed at the capital. Fen shoots Brennan Sorrengail — the wound everyone believed had killed him — and is captured by Lilith. Then dragonfire takes Aretia to the ground and the treaty strikes it off the map. Only Riorson House, built of stone, refused the argument.

The executions

The relics bloomed on the children as they watched.

The rebellion's leaders are burned alive by dragonfire, and their own children are made to stand and watch. As the parents die, the rebellion relic — swirling black ink, Codagh's work — appears on each child's arm. Punishing the kids to deter the parents. Nothing subtle about the message.

The marked ones

The warning grew up into the army.

107 orphaned children, branded and conscripted to the Riders Quadrant to bond or die. Sixteen-year-old Xaden takes the deal that makes him personally accountable for all of them — a scar on his back for every name. Liam, Garrick, Imogen, Bodhi, Sloane: the war was forged out of this cohort.

The Great Betrayal

The Tyrrish Rebellion is the wound the whole series grows out of — a war over the truth about the venin, lost by the people who were telling it, and paid for by their children. Here's the sequence, from the last province's refusal to the moment the 'traitors' end up holding the kingdom together.

The silence
Navarre denies the venin and bans the runes that could fight them. Tyrrendor — last to kneel, the one province that kept its old craft — won't keep pretending the border is quiet.

The apostasy
Fen Riorson leads Tyrrendor to secede, aiming to break the crown's silence and fight the venin openly. Navarre answers it as treason, and the province goes to war.

Aretia falls
The rebellion is crushed at the capital. Fen shoots Brennan, is captured by Lilith, and dragonfire razes Aretia — the treaty wipes it off the Continent's maps like it never stood.

The execution
The rebellion's leaders are burned before their own children. As they die, the rebellion relic blooms on 107 young arms — the crown branding a generation so no one forgets whose they were.

The marked ones
The orphaned children are conscripted to Basgiath under sixteen-year-old Xaden's accountability — the next generation, hidden inside the enemy's school, wearing their parents' guilt on their skin.

The reckoning
Years on, Iron Flame confirms the traitors were right about the venin — and the marked children raise the wards Navarre couldn't. The rebellion Navarre burned becomes the Revolution keeping the Continent alive.
