Venin

Venin · The full story

How a buried word became a continent-wide war.

Every cadet at Basgiath is taught the venin are a fairy tale. They are not. They're what you become when you stop borrowing power from a dragon and start ripping it straight out of the ground — and the ground never grows back.

The power

All the magic, none of the leash.

A rider borrows power through a dragon, on the dragon's terms, and it costs them to overreach. A venin skips the dragon entirely and takes it from the earth — raw, near-limitless, unbound by any creature's discipline. It's the shortcut every wielder in the world could take and is told never to think about. It's also addictive, and it eats the soul. Nobody draws once.

The cost

The land pays first. Then your face.

Draw from the source long enough and the ground behind you dies — permanently, magic and life sucked out until nothing grows again. That's the Barrens: what a war on the earth looks like from the ground up. And it marks the wielder too — red eyes, red veins, graying flesh. Book one puts the tell on the page in a red-rimmed glare and dares us to read it. We didn't.

The enemy Navarre buried

The safest kingdom on the Continent, built on a lie.

The venin aren't a rumour at the border. They're a faction, they drive the wyvern, and Navarre scrubbed both out of the official history so its riders would defend a wall they were told didn't need defending. The whole war college trains for a threat it denies exists — and the one province that refused to keep the secret got burned for it. Tyrrendor's rebellion was, underneath everything, an argument about saying the word out loud.

The turn

The monster isn't at the border. It's one choice away, in everyone.

This is the part that actually frightens: you're not born venin, you become one. Jack turned after Threshing out of nothing grander than envy. Xaden turned at Basgiath because letting Violet die was never on the table. Theophanie turned so long ago she recruits with a smile, and would rather keep you than kill you. And the tell that gives them away is the cruellest one — a venin outlives their own dragon, because they were never really drawing through the bond at all.

Hidden, then here

How a buried word became a continent-wide war.

The venin are the threat the whole series is quietly built around — denied for a book, revealed in the second, and everywhere by the third. Here's the shape of it: the lie Navarre kept, the tell nobody read, and the night the enemy walked through the front door.

  1. 01

    The buried word

Navarre denies the venin exist, bans the runes that could fight them, and scrubs the Archives clean. A whole kingdom is raised to believe the border is quiet and the dark is a bedtime story. The lie is the foundation everything's built on.

  2. 02

    The tell nobody read

Jack Barlowe floods Violet with raw power on the sparring mat, illegally, a red rim around his eyes. Everyone files it under a nasty temper. It was the first venin on the page, hiding in cadet's leathers, and the whole college missed it.

  3. 03

    Past the wards

Sent to Athebyne to be quietly disposed of, the squad crosses the wards and finds the truth Navarre buried — venin are real, wyvern are real, the war never ended. Resson is where it stops being theory and starts taking people.

  4. 04

    The wardstone drops

Jack, secretly venin, drives a dagger into his own dragon to put out the wardstone's flame, and a thousand wyvern pour into Basgiath itself. The theoretical war lands in the courtyard of the safest place in Navarre.

  5. 05

    The rider who turned

Hours from the win, drained and watching Violet die, Xaden reaches into the earth and pulls the one power no rider is meant to touch. He wins the fight and turns venin doing it. The enemy is now the man she loves — red rings and all.

  6. 06

    Off the map

Onyx Storm takes the war continent-wide, and Theophanie shows the upgrade the venin were always building toward: not a horde at the wall but a polite, patient recruiter wearing a familiar face, offering the world instead of taking your head.

We're Caffeine and Curses. The Library started as my design research — I can't put a venin on a shirt without knowing the robes are purple and the red veins spider out around the eyes — so we keep the notes here where everyone can use them. The pages are fan-made, not official; the licensed designs are in the shop.
