Major Burton Varrish

Major Burton Varrish · The full story

From 'tighten the ship' to a dagger through the heart.

Basgiath had a man whose signet could find the one thing you loved most — and a regime that read his body count and handed him a promotion. He made the back half of Iron Flame a held breath.

The man they promoted

The scariest thing about Varrish is the system that wanted him.

Before Basgiath he interrogated prisoners at the Samara outpost, and three of them died on his watch — enough that his own colonel pulled him and sent the problem up the chain to Melgren. Navarre's answer was to make him Vice Commandant of its war college. He didn't slip through. He was chosen, precisely because he'd do the thing the regime needed doing and never once flinch.

Weakness reading

His power was a scalpel for the heart.

Varrish's signet let him see a person's fault-lines — the physical and emotional places they'd break. On Violet he read it fast: her weakness is the people she loves. It's why the college used him as its interrogation specialist. The horror isn't a fireball; it's a composed man in shined boots who looks at you and knows exactly which name to say to take you apart.

Five days

Cut off from Tairn, strapped to a chair, broken and mended and broken again.

The serum severed her bond; Nolon's laced lemonade turned her in. Then five days in the brig — bones dislocated and healed so they could be broken fresh, a truth-sayer beside him to catch her lies, the whole point being bait to lure Xaden into a trap. She stayed standing by hallucinating Liam. You already know how this ends, because we told you in the first line.

You remember every day of this. We'll line it up anyway—

From 'tighten the ship' to a dagger through the heart.

Varrish is Iron Flame's on-the-ground face of the crackdown — the enforcer the regime installs the moment the rebellion starts to show. He isn't the biggest villain in the saga and the book knows it; he's the one who makes it personal, the cruelty you can put a pressed uniform on. His arc is a straight line down: arrive, terrorise, overreach, and hand the person he's breaking to the one man whose signet could finish her — who turns the blade on him instead.

  1. 01

    Tighten the ship

Colonel Aetos brings him in early in Iron Flame as Vice Commandant, and the college reorders around fear overnight — curtailed leave, new punishments, surveillance. The rebellion's pressure gets a jackboot in reply.

  2. 02

    Solas

His dragon sets the tone on Conscription Day, torching panicking first-years — an orange daggertail as unstable and hungry as its rider, roughly half Tairn's size and down the eye Tairn already took.

  3. 03

    The lightning

When Andarna won't appear for maneuvers, Varrish makes Violet cast lightning over and over, past burnout, nearly to death, then charges her with dereliction. His signature move: turn a rider's own power into the instrument of her torture.

  4. 04

    The brig

Nolon's drugged lemonade delivers her cut off from Tairn, and Varrish holds her five days — the whole thing bait to draw Xaden into a trap. She survives it the only way she can: by conjuring Liam.

  5. 05

    The blade

Out of pain that works, he orders Dain to read her mind. Violet floods him with all of it — Resson, venin, Liam, the centuries of lies — and Dain turns, frees her, and refuses to be his instrument. Xaden's shadows pin Varrish; the kill belongs to Violet, who grips an alloy-hilted dagger and, too wrecked to strike alone, drives it through his heart with Xaden's hand over hers. Then she memorises his face.
