She came to Basgiath grieving the brother who died shielding someone else — and aimed all of it at the girl he died for. Then his letters started arriving, one a week. Then she started to thaw.

Liam's sister · The inheritance

She's the cost of his sacrifice, walking around.

Before we ever meet her, we know her — she's the person Liam is fighting to survive for, the little sister he wrote to and worried about and died still asking Violet to protect. So when Sloane finally crosses the parapet a year after Resson, she arrives as the living weight of the series' saddest death, and she puts all of it on the one girl who walked away when her brother didn't.

The letters · The thaw

Fifty letters. One a week. It works.

Violet saved a stack of letters Liam wrote his sister before he died, and she trades them — one letter for each week Sloane agrees to train with Imogen. It reads like blackmail because it half is, but it's the mechanism that cracks Sloane open: week by week she gets pieces of her brother back, gets strong enough to survive, and — slowly, against her will — stops hating the person who kept his words safe.

The siphon · Power as a current

Not a weapon. A conduit.

Her signet is siphoning — she can pull power, and at the edge life itself, out of one source and pour it into another. It's the same mechanism the venin use to burn the world, with one crucial difference: when Sloane moves life, she leaves no mark, no scar, no corruption. The exact same gift that damns the venin makes her the one person who can carry life from a body that has it to spare into a body that's running out.

Sloane's arc is the one about what a person does with a loss too big to hold. She starts furious — at Violet, at Basgiath, at a world that took her brother — and every early scene is that grief looking for somewhere to land. Then the letters do their slow work, Thoirt chooses her, and a rare and frightening signet wakes up in her hands. By the end she's stood at the centre of the series' worst sacrifice and its most tender rescue, learning the same thing both times: her power isn't only a way to end a life. It's a way to give one.

Named, not seen
In Fourth Wing she exists only as the sister Liam is trying to stay alive for — strong, quick, good balance, per him. Both their parents executed after the rebellion; the two of them fostered apart. She never appears. She's the promise Violet makes over Liam's body.

Conscription Day
Iron Flame: she crosses the parapet knowing Violet was there when Liam died, and she blames her for surviving it. Violet gives her the advice that keeps her upright on the crossing anyway — honouring a dying wish from someone who's rejecting her every step. Grief-rage makes Sloane one of the most volatile first-years in the quadrant.

The letters and the rigged win
Violet quietly fixes Sloane's first challenge — a little lillybelle in the frosting, a little ardyce in the face — then offers the letters as the price of training with Imogen. It's the turn: from here, the hate starts to lose its grip, one week and one letter at a time.

Thoirt
At Threshing she bonds a midsize red daggertail with a torn wing — the same breed her brother rode. The echo isn't lost on anyone. The bond gives her the strength to survive her first year and the channel her signet will pour through.

The wardstone
Battle of Basgiath: with Violet burning out at the wardstone, General Lilith Sorrengail orders Sloane to siphon — and channels her own life, and Aimsir's, through Sloane's hands into the stone to hold the wards and turn the assault. The general and her dragon die doing it. Sloane restores a nation and carries the unbearable knowledge that she was the hands it went through.

The artery
Onyx Storm gives her the other side of the same power: she siphons from Dain into Brennan to help drag Mira back, and this time the gift saves instead of costs. The same current that took a life is used to give one — and someone finally says out loud what she's spent two books terrified to be.
