Tairn

Tairn · The full story

The dragon who loved something breakable — twice.

A century as the deadliest thing in the Vale — who lost his first rider to a burnout, refused everyone for five years, then chose one fragile girl and would raze a continent to keep her.

The voice

Best lines in the genre. We don't make the rules.

Straight into Violet's head, mind to mind: dry, imperious, done with everyone. He sells the sarcasm as the whole personality — it isn't. It's a hundred-year-old dragon who'd set the sky alight before he let a single thing touch her, and we are normal about none of it.

The well

The lightning is hers. The danger of it is him.

He doesn't carry a signet — he's the source. A well of power so deep that drawing on it can burn a rider straight out, which is exactly how he lost the last one. So half his job is roaring at Violet to pull back before she empties herself. Every warning is love wearing a threat.

The mate bond

Two dragons decided the humans' fate and didn't ask.

He's mated to Sgaeyl — strongest bond in centuries — and mated dragons can't be kept long apart. Which is the whole reason Violet and Xaden orbit each other: the romance runs on the dragons' marriage. Two ancient things chose, and the humans just live inside it.

What is mine

He said it out loud. We haven't recovered.

Five years he refused everyone, then chose one fragile girl and would raze a continent to keep her. He bows so she can mount, threatens anyone who steps close, and swears she's not his next rider but his last — if she falls, he follows. The gruffest, most total love in the series.

A hundred years

The dragon who loved something breakable — twice.

A century of being the deadliest thing in the Vale, and then he did the one thing a dragon like him never does twice: he loved something breakable. His first rider burned out in his head and nearly took him with her; he answered by refusing everyone for five years. Then a scribe's daughter who couldn't win a fair fight put her body between a bully and a smaller dragon — and a hundred years of contempt chose again, for the last time. The whole series runs on that choice.

  1. 01

    A hundred years

Tairneanach — black morningstartail, second-largest on the Continent, and the only one of his tail-type alive. A century of being the deadliest thing in the sky, and perfectly aware of the space he takes up.

  2. 02

    Naolin

His first and only rider. When Naolin burned out trying to revive a dying Brennan Sorrengail at Aretia, he nearly dragged Tairn into death with him. Tairn survived — and decided that was the last time.

  3. 03

    Five years of no

He refused every rider offered to him for five straight years. A dragon that powerful going unbonded is a scandal and a waste — and he did not care in the slightest.

  4. 04

    The Threshing

Then a scribe's daughter threw herself between Jack Barlowe and a golden feathertail too small to defend itself. He'd been waiting a century for exactly that kind of courage, and he chose her on the spot.

  5. 05

    Two bonds, one mate

Both dragons named her — the first rider in recorded history to hold two bonds. And she learned Tairn was mated to Sgaeyl, which is precisely why Xaden suddenly had every reason to keep her breathing.

  6. 06

    Resson

She wields his power as lightning — a signet unseen in centuries — and at Resson she overextends and falls from his back. Every burnout warning he ever gave comes true at once; only Andarna stopping time keeps the fall from being the end.

  7. 07

    My last

And still he tells her the truth: she is not his next rider but his last, and should she fall, he will follow. As the war jumps off the map, a hundred years of contempt stays undone by one fragile girl.

In his words

In his own words.

“I could torch him if you like. But you do seem attached.”

Iron Flame — Rebecca Yarros

“You do not have the right to burn what is mine.”

Iron Flame — Rebecca Yarros

“Tell him if he harms you, I'll scorch the ground where he stands.”

Fourth Wing — Rebecca Yarros

“One does not live a century without being well aware of the space one takes up.”

Fourth Wing — Rebecca Yarros

“You're making us look bad. Stop it.”

Iron Flame — Rebecca Yarros
I chose you not as my next but as my last, and should you fall, then I will follow.
