The Luminary

Tecarus's Poromish artifact · a ring of blue crystals near the size of a dragon · the heat the whole rebellion runs on

The Luminary

It doesn't kill anything. It just gets hot enough that the thing which does kill venin can finally be made.

A vast ring of vibrant blue crystals that drives dragonfire to smelting heat — the one middle link between a dragon's fire and a venin-killing blade. No luminary, no alloy. No alloy, no daggers, no wardstone, no war worth fighting.

The middle link

It's not a weapon. It's the reason there are weapons.

The chain that keeps the Continent alive runs through this one unglamorous object: a dragon breathes fire, the luminary drives that fire to smelting heat, and only at that heat can you forge the dragon-eggshell alloy that puts a venin down for good — and powers a wardstone besides. Every venin-killing dagger the marked ones carry starts here. Lose the luminary and the whole defence quietly stops being possible. It never throws a punch. It just makes every punch that lands.

Won in an arena

She killed a caged venin to prove a point, and left with a forge.

The rebellion's luminary doesn't come cheap or come easy — it belongs to Viscount Tecarus of Poromiel, and Violet wins it by walking into his arena and killing a caged venin with her lightning, live, as proof of what she is. It gets relocated to Aretia to complete the forge. That's the moment Poromiel stops being the kingdom across the border Navarre sneers at and becomes the ally holding the one thing the war can't be fought without.

The File

What it is
An artifact that intensifies dragonfire to smelting-grade heat. That's its whole, indispensable job.
What it looks like
A standing ring of vibrant blue crystals — nearly as wide as Sgaeyl. Cold-bright, and enormous.
What it makes possible
The alloy. Smelt dragon eggshell hot enough and you get the only metal that kills a venin and keeps it dead.
Why it matters
That same alloy powers the wardstones. The luminary is the quiet first domino of every defence the rebellion has.
How many exist
Two known. One at Basgiath War College. One held by Viscount Tecarus of Poromiel.
How the rebellion got one
Violet won Tecarus's by killing a caged venin in his arena — proof of lightning, paid out as a forge.
Where it went
To Aretia, to finish the forge that arms the marked ones against the thing Navarre denies.
Why Poromiel matters
This is the reason. The kingdom Navarre looks down on holds a piece the rebellion can't win without.
