The Vale · The full story
Not a campus feature. The load-bearing wall of the world.
You walk in on foot, spread out like you were told, and hope something enormous decides you're worth keeping.
Threshing
The most dangerous day of first year, and it's an interview.
October first, into the valley on foot, spread out, and wait. A dragon bonds you or it doesn't — no consolation prize for almost. Both sides can kill: an unimpressed dragon, a rival cadet with nothing to lose. You survive it, or you don't graduate to the part that's actually hard.
The wardstone
The reason the Vale matters more than any map admits.
At the valley's edge sits the wardstone the First Six wove during the Great War — powered by dragonfire across all seven breeds. It's the whole kingdom's shield, and the venin covet the energy in the hatching grounds. The Vale isn't scenery; it's the load-bearing wall of the world.
Off-limits
Sovereign ground. You're a guest, and barely that.
Yarros barely describes how it looks — because it isn't ours to sightsee. The Vale is where dragons retreat from humans, lay their eggs, and keep their young. Andarna's egg hid here for six centuries among the nests. You don't wander in. You're summoned, or you're trespassing.
The ground itself
Not a campus feature. The load-bearing wall of the world.
Every other page treats the Vale as the room where Threshing happens. It's the other way around: Threshing is the one day a year the dragons let humans in. The valley was theirs first, it holds the whole kingdom up, and it keeps the war's oldest secrets in its nests. Here's the ground itself, not the ceremony.

Their ground, not ours
The Vale is a forested bowl behind the citadel — the dragons' home and hatching ground, not a training yard with a view. They hold it. Humans set foot inside once a year, on foot and by permission, and Yarros barely describes how it looks because it was never ours to sightsee.

The nests
This is where dragons retreat from people, lay their eggs, and raise their young — and it kept a secret for six centuries: Andarna's egg, hidden among the nests, an entire seventh breed waiting in a valley everyone thought they'd mapped.
- 03
The wardstone
At the valley's edge sits the wardstone the First Six wove during the Great War, fed by dragonfire across all seven breeds. It's the shield the whole of Navarre stands behind — which makes this quiet valley the most strategically important ground in the kingdom.

What the enemy wants
The venin covet the raw energy concentrated in the hatching grounds, and that's the real stake of the Vale: not who gets chosen here one morning a year, but whether the wall holding the kingdom up stays lit. Sacred, sovereign, and load-bearing — in that order.
In its own words
The valley the dragons call home.

“up ahead, sitting so perfectly still that they might be gargoyles, are the hundred and one dragons who have decided to bond this year.”
