Andarna · The full story
From the smallest dragon in the Vale to the seventh breed.
The smallest, hungriest feathertail everyone wrote off — who turns out to be the near-extinct breed the histories lost, the missing seventh breath the wards were always waiting for.
The impossible bond
Two dragons. And the second one is her.
You cannot bond a feathertail — too young, too small, the gift gone the moment they grow up, not done in living memory. Violet did it anyway, on top of Tairn, and dragon law had to allow it: nobody ever wrote a rule against a thing that had never happened. That second bond is the whole reason Violet is Violet. Also she'd really like to know if she can eat the sheep.
The cost
She stops time. It is never free.
She can freeze the world for a few seconds and hand the stillness to Violet — the reason Violet walks out of the dorm attack, the reason she survives Resson. The part we don't get over is the bill. Every use drains her for days, and at Resson she poured out so much she burned straight out of her feathertail stage. The baby gave up being a baby. On purpose. We're completely fine.
Lost history
The little gold one is the missing seventh.
The wardstone needed seven breeds and the world had only ever counted six. She's the seventh — the near-extinct, colour-shifting one everyone forgot existed, walking around idolising Tairn's black scales and wanting so badly to be just like him. Then she wakes from the Dreamless Sleep deep iridescent black, with a scorpiontail. Be careful what you wish for. Comic relief and the missing piece the whole series is built on. Both. Always both.
You know the little gold one. Sit down anyway—
From the smallest dragon in the Vale to the seventh breed.
The smallest, hungriest dragon in the Vale, a feathertail everyone wrote off as too young to matter — and she turns out to be the near-extinct breed the histories lost, the missing seventh breath the wards were always waiting for. Her whole arc is the series' softest joke and its biggest reveal wearing the same gold scales. She gives away her time to keep Violet alive, gives up her childhood at Resson, and grows into the black dragon she always wanted to be, at a cost nobody saw coming. Comic relief and lost history. Both. Always both.
- 01
Threshing
Three cadets corner a gold feathertail nobody thinks is worth saving, and a scribe's daughter throws her own body over it. Four seconds later the feathertail bonds her back — the second dragon to choose Violet, the first double bond in generations.
- 02
The gift
She can stop time, and she gives it away. When assassins come for Violet in the dark, Andarna pushes her whole feathertail power through the bond and freezes the world long enough for Violet to live. It costs her days. She does it anyway.
- 03
Resson
Told to stay hidden, she disobeys — freezes time so Violet can land the strike, then catches her falling. She pours out so much of herself that, spent and far from the Vale, her body starts growing years before it should.
- 04
The Dreamless Sleep
She goes down gold and small and wakes doubled in size, deep iridescent black, her feathertail turned to a scorpiontail. She always wanted Tairn's black scales. She got them — plus one wing that never finished, and a body that may never carry a rider.
- 05
The seventh breath
The wardstone needs seven breeds, not six, and the world only ever knew six. She's the seventh — the near-extinct, colour-shifting breed the histories lost — and her scales shift black to purple to stone as she sets the wards ablaze. The iron flame is hers.
- 06
The Irids
In the Isle Kingdoms she finds her true kin: peacemakers who meant her as a test humanity was supposed to pass, and failed. They call her home, Violet lets her go — and at the very last moment, she comes back.
Her two forms · Gold, then black
One dragon, two shapes — and Resson is the reason.
She hatched gold: molten scales, a feathered tail, round eyes, no claws, small enough to hide behind Violet — and she idolised Tairn's black hide, said she wanted to be just like him. Then Resson burned her out of her feathertail stage too early, and she woke from the Dreamless Sleep as exactly what she'd wished for. Be careful what you wish for.
- The golden feathertailGold, small, freezes time — the sweet years.
- The black scorpiontailIridescent black, grown — Resson's price.
Straight from the highlights
The lines we underlined for her.
“small golden dragon. Sunlight reflects off its scales and horns as it stands to its full height, flicking a feathered tail around the side of its body. The feathertail.”

“I put one mental foot in my Archives and feel power ripple through my veins. Bright orange, crackling energy streams in from the door behind me, and there's a golden light that shines from the window I created just for Andarna.”

We're Caffeine and Curses. The Library started as my design research — I can't put Andarna on a shirt without knowing she's gold, and her tail ends in feathers — so we keep the notes here where everyone can use them. The pages are fan-made, not official; the licensed designs are in the shop.
