Who she is · The other woman, upgraded

Introduced to make us jealous. Stayed to make us feel bad about it.

Cat arrives as pure romantic threat — beautiful, poised, and openly staking a claim on Xaden — and the early read is easy: hate her. Then the book keeps handing her nerve, competence, a throne's worth of politics, and eventually a grief of her own, until the neat 'rival' label stops fitting. She's proof this series doesn't do disposable women, even the ones it dresses up as obstacles.

The politics · A crown, not a heart

Her interest in Xaden was always about the alliance.

The thing that makes Cat more interesting than a jealous ex: she mostly wanted the match for what it secured — power, protection, a claim — not for love. She's Poromish nobility playing a long game across a border everyone else is dying on. When she's cruel to Violet it's part heartbreak and part strategy, and the book is honest enough to let it be both.

The turn · Grudging, then genuine

Nobody wanted her. Everybody roots for her anyway.

Her whole trajectory is a slow thaw — antagonist to challenger to uneasy ally to comrade who's earned a place — and by the time she's grieving someone she actually loved, the rooting is involuntary. It's the good kind of redemption: no grand apology, just enough shared danger and real loss that you look up one day and realise you're on her side.

A name, dropped
She's in the story before she's on the page — Bodhi lets slip that Xaden has a past with someone called Catriona, and the insecurity does its work long before Violet ever sees her face. Cat, characteristically, is aware of Violet well before Violet is aware of her.

The rendezvous
Violet meets her at a clandestine dagger drop — Xaden running alloy blades to the fliers — and there she is: striking, proprietary about Xaden, and then revealed as the betrothed he never mentioned. A political match, he says afterward, one he ended. Cat did not get that memo emotionally.

Luella
On the brutal crossing to Aretia a flier dies, and Cat blames Violet for saving a rider over her — and swears to kill her for it. It isn't fair, exactly, but it isn't nothing either, and it fuels the hostility straight into the challenge.

The challenge
Once the fliers fall under the Rider's Codex, Cat challenges Violet — and fights dirty in the cleverest way, taunting her about being Xaden's placeholder while amplifying every ounce of that jealousy with her gift. Violet nearly chokes her out before Xaden cuts through the spell. Cat gets reprimanded; the squads merge; Violet hands her the Iron Squad patch. Enemies, stitched onto the same sleeve.

Basgiath
When the wyvern come, the rivalry gets shelved for something more useful — Cat, now an actual ally, is the one telling Violet to get the rain called off so the gryphons can fight. Not friends. Functional. It's a start, and it holds.

Trager
Onyx Storm puts her on Violet's hand-picked quest squad as Poromiel's own, and somewhere in it the armour comes off: she falls for the flier Trager, genuinely — and then loses him, an arrow through the heart, his gryphon dying with him. The cruel rival grieving like the rest of us is the moment she stops being a foil and becomes a person. We didn't plan to care. We cared.
