Liam Mairi · The full story

The order that became the loss.

He was assigned to guard her. He became the friend we weren't remotely prepared to lose. We are completely fine about it.

The order

It started as an order.

Xaden told him to guard her with his life, and he did — and that should have been the whole story. It wasn't. He carried her books, her nerves, half her fights, teased her through Battle Brief, and somewhere in there stopped being the assignment and started being the person who made Basgiath survivable. We clocked it before Violet did. We always do.

Kind on purpose

The warm one. On purpose.

Everyone in that quadrant was running on spite and adrenaline, and Liam just… chose to be kind about it. Dimples, dumb jokes, stupidly good hearing he mostly used to eavesdrop on people he loved. A marked one — orphaned by the rebellion, conscripted, every reason on earth to be bitter — who point-blank refused to be. That's the part that undoes us. Not the loyalty. The gentleness.

The letters

Fifty letters. First year. Just in case.

His first year, he sat down and wrote his little sister about fifty letters and put them somewhere safe. Seventeen, and already planning for a version of the world that didn't have him in it. Violet rations them to Sloane now, one a week, like they'll run out — because they will. We're not going to talk about the letters.

Resson

We're not going to do Resson to you.

You were there. You know what Deigh did, you know what that meant, and you know exactly who Xaden was crouched over in the mud. We're not narrating it back to you like you'd forget. Just — he had a second signet he never bothered to mention, and he spent his last clear breath making sure everyone else would be all right. Of course he did. Look after Sloane. Hear Xaden out. Then the honor line. We're fine.

You don't need the recap. But since we're both rereading anyway—

The order that became the loss.

He walks on as an order — Xaden's most trusted marked one, told to keep the general's fragile daughter alive. He doesn't stay because of the order. He stays because he quietly decides she's his, the way he decides everyone he loves is his to protect, and then proves it in the one currency Basgiath actually counts. Fourth Wing hands you the warmest person in the quadrant on purpose — so that Resson can take him mid-sentence, shielding someone else's dragon. That's the whole shape of him: the golden one, gone doing exactly what he'd have chosen.

  1. 01

    The assignment

Cadets jump Violet. Xaden hands her a bodyguard — him — and tells him to guard her with his life. Neither of them asked for it.

  2. 02

The friendship that outgrew the order

He stays long past anything orders require. Archives duty, the gauntlet, squad life — he's just there, warm and dry and impossible to rattle, until 'the assignment' isn't a word anyone uses anymore.

  3. 03

    Athebyne

For the final war games Xaden pulls him onto command staff with one job: keep Violet steady. Then the marked ones' real allegiance surfaces and she wonders if the friendship was ever real. It was.

  4. 04

    Resson

Past the wards, the squad meets what Navarre buried — venin, wyvern, a war that never ended. Liam reveals a second signet nobody knew he had and stays to shield Tairn. Deigh dies covering him; the severed bond takes Liam. Xaden carries him to die beside his dragon.

  5. 05

    After

He doesn't quite leave. In Iron Flame he steadies Violet through Varrish's torture as a hallucination she keeps insisting isn't real — and the fifty letters he wrote Sloane keep arriving, one a week, long after he's gone.

In his own words

Two lines. That's all it took.

“And I know you feel betrayed, but Xaden needs you. And I don't just mean alive, Violet. He needs you. Please hear him out.”

Resson — Fourth Wing

“It has been my honor.”

His last words — Fourth Wing
Xaden needs you. And I don't just mean alive.
