The Parapet

The Parapet · The full story

Step by step.

Eighteen inches of wet stone, two hundred feet up, no rail — and it's the easy part of the day.

The crossing

The interview is a fall.

Two hundred feet up on eighteen inches of slick stone, in a storm, with the wind trying to help you off. Painted lines mark the quarters and the highest point at the middle. Violet — joints that dislocate on a good day — crosses it repeating one thing: she will not die. The parapet doesn't grade effort. You reach the far side or you don't.

The shoe swap

The friendship that starts by giving away half your traction.

At the top of the turret Violet notices Rhiannon's boots have no grip, and swaps one of her own rider shoes so they each cross with one good sole. On a bridge where footwear is life or death, she gives half of hers to a stranger. That's the whole character in one gesture — and the start of her best friendship.

The rules as a weapon

Jack came to kill her. She'd read the Codex.

Mid-span, Jack Barlowe throws a candidate off to clear his path and comes for Violet. She draws a dagger and pins him at the edge, citing the Codex line against harming a rider in formation. She out-thinks the biggest, meanest thing on the bridge — because out-muscling was never going to be the plan.

Violet's crossing

Step by step.

The parapet is where Fourth Wing starts and where Violet's whole thesis gets stated: she can't out-muscle this place, so she'll out-think it — and she'll still stop to help someone on the way. Here's the crossing, step by step.

  1. 01

    Mira's warning

At the foot of the turret, Mira lays out the lethal facts: eighteen inches, two hundred feet, rain moving in, no delay. Cross it or don't become a rider.

  2. 02

    The turret

Two hundred and fifty railless steps up the southern turret — and candidates fall from the stairs before they ever reach the bridge.

  3. 03

    Dylan falls

The rain hits. Dylan slips, catches the edge, dangles, and loses his grip — Violet hears him scream the whole way down. Roughly one in seven never make it across.

  4. 04

    The far side

She reaches the end, drops into the courtyard, and becomes a cadet. A year later she's posted here herself, meeting Liam's sister at the same railless edge.
