Aretia · The full story

How Aretia came back.

Navarre burned it to the ground and struck it off the map — so of course it's still standing, greener than before, arming the war they swore wasn't coming.

The burning

Navarre razed it and called that the end of the story.

When the apostasy failed, dragonfire took Aretia to the ground and the treaty struck it off the maps — a scorch mark where a capital used to be. Riorson House was stone, so the fire lost that argument. Everything the Tyrrish rebuilt, they rebuilt around the one thing that wouldn't burn.

The throne

They kept the char. On purpose.

In the Assembly chamber sits a chair half rich polished walnut, half wood burned black, a sleeping dragon carved at its peak. Nobody sanded the ruin off. The seat of Tyrrish power is literally half ash — because pretending it never happened is Navarre's move, not theirs.

The forge

This is where the war stops being hopeless.

Aretia has the luminary: dragonfire concentrated hot enough to smelt dragon-eggshell alloy into daggers that put a venin down for good. Runes go back into the curriculum, the presses run, gryphon fliers train on the mats beside riders. A war college that admits what it's arming against.

The truth

Everything Basgiath taught you, corrected in one room.

Violet arrives poisoned and leaves with the actual history: venin are real, the wyvern are real, the wards are failing, and her brother's been running the resistance for six years. Aretia is the place the lie doesn't reach — which is exactly why it had to disappear.

A rebel city

How Aretia came back.

Aretia has died once already. The whole city is the story of what Navarre couldn't finish — burned, erased, and quietly rebuilt into the one place ready to fight the war the crown keeps denying. Here's how a scorch mark became the rebellion's home.

  1. 01

    The apostasy

Fen Riorson leads Tyrrendor's bid to secede — partly to break Navarre's silence and fight the venin in the open. It fails.

  2. 02

    The fire

Dragonfire razes Aretia; the treaty wipes it off the map. Only Riorson House, built of stone, survives the burning.

  3. 03

    Believed erased

For years it's a scorch mark on the Continent's maps and nothing more. That's the official version. The Tyrrish have other plans.

  4. 04

    Rebuilt in secret

Green roofs rise over the ruin in a warm hidden valley beyond Navarre's wards. Brennan Sorrengail — not dead after all — runs the Revolution from the fortress.

  5. 05

    The second force

After Resson, Violet recovers here. Then two hundred riders and a hundred gryphon fliers defect, and the hideout becomes an army with a war college.

  6. 06

    The forge and the wardstone

The luminary arms them against venin; the stolen journals teach them to raise the wards. The city Navarre killed becomes the one keeping the Continent alive.

In its own words

The city says the quiet part in stone.

“Half palace, half barracks, but entirely a fortress.”
