Basgiath War College

Basgiath War College · The full story

How Basgiath actually runs.

The place that keeps trying to kill her is also the only place that ever made her a weapon — and we'd bleed for it anyway.

The parapet

The interview is a fall.

Eighteen inches of uneven stone, two hundred feet up, no rail — and it doesn't care that it's raining. Cross it your first morning or you don't cross anything again. 'Only the strong survive' isn't a warning here; the Codex files it as policy.

The lie

The record forgot to mention the monsters.

Markham curated venin out of the Archives and filed the truth under 'never happened,' so an entire college trained for the wrong war — until Jesinia quietly slipped Violet the book that wasn't supposed to exist. Whoever keeps the record keeps the power.

The death roll

They read the names out loud.

The dead get counted and recited — no euphemism, no flinch, just the roll and the next name. The place that keeps trying to kill you keeps the tally too, and it's tidy about it. Grief goes administrative here, which is somehow worse.

The squad

It becomes home. That's the cruel part.

Between the parapet and the front, the squad happens — gallows jokes at breakfast, Archives runs after curfew, someone kind in a place that punishes kindness. A fortress built to break you, and it's still where the family is. We'd bleed for it anyway, and yes, we hear ourselves.

A cadet's year

How Basgiath actually runs.

Basgiath runs on a loop, and it's the same one every year: it conscripts you, sorts you by colour, spends months trying to kill you, lets the survivors bond — and then hands the ones who lived to the war it spent a whole book pretending wasn't real. Here's the year, start to front.

  1. 01

    Conscription Day

You don't apply to Basgiath; if a parent serves, it comes for you. The exam sorts every eligible kid toward rider, scribe, healer or infantry — your colour decided before you've said a word.

  2. 02

    The parapet

First morning, eighteen inches of wet stone and a two-hundred-foot drop. Cross it or fall off it; the college calls that the entrance exam and doesn't blink at the ones who never reach the far side.

  3. 03

    Squad and section

You're assigned a squad and the year turns survivable — someone kind, someone funny, someone who has your back on the mat. What the sparring breaks, the menders close — Nolon-steady if you're lucky — and every mend costs the healer the wound they take on.

  4. 04

    Threshing

October first, into the Vale, where a dragon chooses you or walks past and leaves you nothing. No consolation prize for 'almost.' It's the bond the whole quadrant is a bet on, and the day the rest of your life gets decided.

  5. 05

    The trials & War Games

Gauntlet climbs, War Games, and Battle Brief — where the scribes decide which attacks count as 'real.' You spend the year training hard for a war the record has been quietly editing.

  6. 06

    Graduation & the front

Survive it all and you earn your leathers and a border posting; get no dragon and the infantry's ground war claims you instead. Either way, Basgiath graduates its kids straight into the dark it swore wasn't there.

The four quadrants

One college, four colours, and the exam decides which one you bleed in.

Basgiath sorts every conscript into one of four quadrants, and the whole place runs on colour — the black leathers you earn, the cream you're raised in, the pale blue that patches you, the navy that holds the floor. The exam decides your colour before you've said a word; the dragon, sometimes, overrules it.

  • RidersDragons at the end, a parapet at the start — the worst odds on campus.
  • ScribesThey keep the record — and quietly decide what it leaves out.
  • HealersThe only wing trying to keep cadets alive — and paying in their own pain.
  • InfantryThe biggest quadrant, no dragon — the ground army that holds the line.

In its own words

Basgiath doesn't do comfort.

“There is nothing more sacred than the Archives. Even temples can be rebuilt, but books cannot be rewritten.”
