The Battle of Basgiath · The full story
How the safest place in Navarre became the front.
For a whole book the war was theoretical — something happening at the border, to other people. Then a cadet drove a dagger into his own dragon, the wards went dark, and a thousand wyvern came through the ceiling of the safest place in Navarre.
The betrayal
The enemy was never at the border. It was in Flame Section the whole time.
Jack Barlowe didn't die under that mountain. He came back a dark wielder and drove a blade into his own dragon to put out the wardstone's flame — the one act that opens Navarre to a horde. The clean schoolyard villain was the crack in the wall, and he chose it out of jealousy.
The breach
The theoretical war landed in the courtyard.
With the wards gone, a thousand wyvern and the venin driving them pour into the college that spent a whole book pretending they weren't real. It stops being a Battle Brief slide the instant it's overhead. Sawyer loses a leg below the knee shielding his dragon; the squad bleeds where everyone can see.
The wardstone
It took every drop the most powerful rider in Navarre had.
Brennan mends the cracked stone; Violet pours raw power in and starts to burn out. Her mother kicks her clear, has Sloane Mairi siphon Lilith and Aimsir's lives straight into the stone, and lights the wards with everything she has left. She and her dragon go together. What's left is a black flame.
The turn
He won the battle and lost the thing that made him a rider.
Feeling Violet dying through the bond, drained and out of options, Xaden reaches into the earth and pulls the one power no rider is meant to touch — because losing her was never on the table. The wyvern fall, the venin break, and he tells her to be afraid of him. Red rings say the rest.
That night
How the safest place in Navarre became the front.
The Battle of Basgiath is the night the whole first duology has been quietly building toward — the moment the war Navarre buried claws its way inside the walls and forces everyone to look at it. Here's how one dagger brought the ceiling down, and what it cost to raise it again.
- 01
The lie holds
Basgiath still officially denies the venin. The wards hum, the record stays tidy, and a college full of children believes the walls will keep the dark out. They have exactly one night left to believe it.
- 02
The dagger
Jack Barlowe — presumed dead, secretly venin, mended bone by bone — drives a blade into Baide's neck. Her blood puts out the wardstone's flame, and the shield over the entire kingdom goes dark.
- 03
The flood
A thousand wyvern and the venin behind them come through the breach. The war is suddenly inside the courtyard. Sawyer loses a leg below the knee shielding Sliseag; Violet and Ridoc drag him clear.
- 04
The mending
Brennan reaches the wardstone chamber and mends the shattered pillar to burnout. Violet pours raw power into it to imbue it and starts to burn out herself, unable to light it alone.
- 05
The general's price
Lilith kicks Violet clear of the stone, orders Sloane to siphon, and channels her own life and Aimsir's through Sloane's hands into the wardstone. She lights the wards with the last of herself. She and Aimsir die doing it; Brennan holds her at the end.
- 06
The seventh flame
Seven breeds of dragonfire raise the wards — Andarna the hidden seventh that makes it possible. The wyvern drop from the sky, the venin retreat, and an iron flame burns black on top of the mended stone.
- 07
Red rings
Hours from the win, Xaden pulls power from the earth to save Violet and turns venin. The last thing she sees is the ring of red around his eyes. The war leaves the map for good, and it takes the ending with it.
In its own words
What the night left standing.
“When Andarna moves, my gaze wanders up the mended wardstone to the iron flame that burns black on top. It's all that's left of my mother.”
