Ridoc Gamlyn

Ridoc Gamlyn · The full story

From smart-ass to the one who stood in the fire.

He's the one cracking jokes on a mat where people actually die — because at Basgiath you laugh or you don't get back up.

The funny one

The jokes were never the whole thing.

Violet learns his name first because he won't shut up through the first history lesson — honestly, we'd have clocked him first too. But nobody's that funny for free. The jokes are load-bearing: the pressure valve that keeps the squad breathing between the parts of Basgiath built to kill them.

The charge

"Guard her like you're me." Liam only had to say it once.

The joking drops the second someone needles Violet — the first crack in the armor. Then Liam hands him one job, guard her like you're me, and dies at Resson before the year is out. Ridoc never quite stops hovering after that. Draw your own conclusions. We did.

The fire

Then he put his body between us and the fire.

Wardstone chamber: he throws himself in front of everyone and pulls a wall of ice from thin air to eat a dragon's fire, hands burned raw. Two arrows in his side, blood at his mouth, still insisting he's fine. The funniest person in the room is also the one who says the hard, true thing — and it got us anyway.

You know all this. Reread it with us anyway.

From smart-ass to the one who stood in the fire.

Nobody's that funny for free. Ridoc is the smart-ass Violet learns to name first — the pressure valve that keeps Second Squad breathing between the parts of Basgiath that try to kill them. But the joke was always armor. Across three books the funniest person in the room turns out to be the one who takes a charge nobody asked him to keep, throws his own body in front of the fire, and — when it matters most — says the hard, true thing out loud. The core four make it to the next chapter because he decides they will.

  1. 01

    The smart-ass

Violet learns his name faster than anyone in Second Squad because he will not shut up through their first history lesson. Smart-ass, pressure valve, and — we clock it the same second she does — impossible to ignore.

  2. 02

    The charge

The jokes vanish the moment Tynan needles Violet — the first look under the armor. Then Liam hands him one job, guard her like you're me, and dies at Resson before the year is out. Ridoc never quite stops hovering after that.

  3. 03

    Aotrom

He survives Threshing and bonds Aotrom — a brown swordtail with his exact sense of humor, a two-man prank war waiting to happen (itching powder between the scales; a whole ocean back). His ice signet shows up before Violet's even does.

  4. 04

    The wall of ice

Wardstone chamber, Battle of Basgiath: he throws himself in front of everyone and pulls a wall of ice from the air to eat Baide's dragonfire, hands left burned raw. Then two arrows in his side, blood at his mouth — still insisting he's fine. Of course he does.

  5. 05

    The unglamorous shift

When Sawyer loses the leg, Ridoc doesn't go soft or careful about it — he stays exactly as much of a menace, right there in the infirmary, because that's the version of showing up Sawyer can actually stand. Found family does the shifts nobody photographs.

  6. 06

    The line

The jokester says the hardest thing in the room: there has to be a line where Violet lets Xaden go, or it isn't just Xaden they lose. He fights to join the quest squad too — bad things happen when they're apart, and we know exactly who taught him that.

In their words

Two gags and a gut-punch — the whole man in three lines.

“Guess the dragons think she's insufferable, too.”
