He failed to bond the first time and repeated the year rather than go home. Then he lost a leg saving his dragon — and built himself a new one. Steady doesn't mean soft. It means he rebuilds.

The repeat · Twice a survivor

No dragon the first time. He stayed anyway.

Sawyer did his whole first year in the Riders Quadrant and no dragon bonded him at Threshing — so he repeated it, at a college where most people only die once. He was too embarrassed to tell his family the truth, so he told them riders aren't allowed to write home for two years. On the second attempt Sliseag chose him. Repeating made him the quiet, semi-senior steadying hand of the squad — the one who already knew where the bodies fall.

The metallurgist · His signet

He can't make metal. He can make it do anything.

His signet is metallurgy — he bends, heats, moves, and reshapes any metal that already exists, with one hard limit: he can't conjure it out of nothing. In the War Games heist he holds a door sealed behind the squad while they lift the map straight out of the general's office. For the rebellion he's the one who turns raw alloy into weapons and wards. The least flashy signet in the squad, and one of the most useful.

The steady one · Iron Squad

Rhiannon's pick for second, and she was right.

When Rhiannon builds her squad she names Sawyer her Executive Officer — over Violet, plainly, because Violet's always somewhere else and someone has to actually hold the post. He's the straight man to Ridoc's comedy, the calm in the ensemble, the one who learned sign language from Violet so he could talk to Jesinia. Low ego, high reliability. The person you want holding the line you can't see.

Sawyer's whole story is earned belonging. He starts as the quiet repeat with a lie to his family and something to prove, and he proves it the slow way: a second bonding that actually takes, a useful signet, a heist won on a sealed door, a promotion to second. Then the series asks the hardest version of the question — what happens when a rider loses a leg — and Sawyer answers it with engineering and stubbornness instead of surrender. He doesn't get put back together. He puts himself back together. That's the whole man.

The second Threshing
Introduced as the repeat — no dragon the first year, too proud to admit it at home. On the second attempt Sliseag, a red swordtail, chooses him, and he's openly delighted. A second chance that finally paid off, at a place that rarely gives them.

The signet
After bonding, his power surfaces: metallurgy. He starts working under the metals professor, learning to bend and shape and seal — the limitation baked in from the start that he can only work metal that already exists. Useful, unglamorous, his.

War Games
In the final squad challenge he uses his signet to hold a door shut behind the squad while they steal a map of live Navarrian intelligence out of the general's office. The first clear proof that the quiet engineer is an operator when it counts.

Second in command
Rhiannon names him her Executive Officer — over Violet, because Violet's never in one place long enough. Sawyer holds the post the way he holds everything: steadily, without needing anyone to notice.

The leg
Battle of Basgiath: a wyvern lunges for Sliseag and Sawyer kicks at its jaws to keep it off his dragon — and takes the bite himself, his leg gone below the knee. Violet and Ridoc get him out. He traded a leg to shield the dragon that chose him, and he'd tell you it wasn't a hard call.

Back in the air
Onyx Storm is his recovery: relearning to walk, to mount, to fly, with Violet beside him at the flight field for the first attempt and Jesinia's note on his bedside table. He forges the metal leg, gets back on Sliseag, and takes flight again. The engineer rebuilds the one machine that matters most.
