The Wardstone

The Wardstone · The full story

How a forgotten stone became the thing the war is fought over.

For six hundred years it was just there — a pillar in a chamber nobody thought about, quietly keeping the venin out of everything. Then one cadet put out its flame, and the whole kingdom found out at once what it was for.

What it does

One pillar, a kingdom's worth of wards.

Inside the wards, no magic works except a dragon's and its rider's — which is precisely how you keep venin and wyvern out of a continent. The First Six raised the first wardstone at Basgiath more than six centuries ago, and everything Navarre calls safe stretches out from that one stem. It's the most important object in the world, and for six hundred years almost nobody thought about it. That was the problem the whole time.

How you light it

Two steps, seven breeds, no shortcuts.

Raising the wards is a ritual, not a switch. First the signet-wielders pour power into the stone until it hums, imbued and ready. Then the collective fire of all seven dragon breeds is breathed across it, and a black iron flame settles on the crown — that flame is the wards, standing. Skip a breed and it doesn't hold. Seven is not a suggestion. Seven is the entire design.

The night it went dark

Jack put out the flame. A general put it back with her life.

The one act that opens Navarre to a horde is extinguishing that flame — and Jack Barlowe, secretly venin, does it from the inside, killing his own dragon to drop the wards over the whole kingdom in a single night. What it costs to relight is the gut-punch: Brennan mends the shattered pillar, Violet imbues it past burnout, and General Sorrengail spends her own life and her dragon's to crown it. The black flame that's left is, in Violet's words, all that's left of her mother. The night itself lives on the Battle of Basgiath page. The object carries the scar.

Six of seven

Aretia's stone was always one breed short.

There's a second wardstone hidden in a canyon chamber beneath Aretia, and the rebellion rouses it — but it fires on only six breeds instead of the required seven, so it runs at reduced capacity and slowly deteriorates. That deficit is the engine of everything that comes after: the wards weakening, the war spreading, and Violet flying off the edge of the map hunting the lost seventh breed. The answer was in front of her the whole time. Andarna is an irid — the seventh — left behind, it turns out, for exactly this.

One pillar's history

How a forgotten stone became the thing the war is fought over.

The wardstone doesn't do much on its own — it just stands in a chamber and holds up the sky. Its whole story is what happens to a kingdom that forgets its one miracle is a machine somebody has to keep running. Here's the pillar's life, from the First Six to the hunt for the seventh.

  1. 01

    The First Six

Six riders raise the original wardstone at Basgiath over six hundred years ago. The wards spread out from it across nearly all of Navarre — a peace so old that in time no one alive remembers it was ever built.

  2. 02

    The long quiet

Six centuries of the stone simply working. A whole war college trusts the walls without ever asking what holds them. Nobody guards a miracle they've forgotten is one.

  3. 03

    The flame goes out

Jack Barlowe — secretly venin — drives a blade into his own dragon to extinguish the wardstone's flame. The wards fall over the entire kingdom, and a thousand wyvern come through the ceiling of the safest place in Navarre.

  4. 04

    The price of relighting

Brennan mends the cracked pillar, Violet imbues it past burnout, and Lilith and Aimsir pour their own lives into it to raise the seven-breed fire. The wards hold. The iron flame burns black over what it cost.

  5. 05

    Six of seven

Beneath Aretia, the rebellion wakes a second wardstone — but it fires on only six breeds and begins to deteriorate. The wards weaken, the war spreads, and the deficit becomes the crisis everything else orbits.

  6. 06

    The seventh breed

The missing fire is the irids, and Andarna is one — left behind on purpose, precisely to breathe for a wardstone. The object's oldest secret turns out to be its only cure.

In its own words

What the stone left behind.

“When Andarna moves, my gaze wanders up the mended wardstone to the iron flame that burns black on top. It's all that's left of my mother.”

We're Caffeine and Curses. The Library started as my design research — I can't put the wardstone on a shirt without knowing the flame that burns on top of it is black, not orange — so we keep the notes here where everyone can use them. The pages are fan-made, not official; the licensed designs are in the shop.
