Violet Sorrengail

Violet Sorrengail · The full story

From scribe to weapon.

The general's fragile scribe daughter, marched onto the parapet to die quietly — who out-survived all of it, bonded two dragons, and turned her scholar's brain on the lie the empire was built to hide.

Who she is · The underdog

The oranges. You know the ones.

She can't out-muscle anyone and she never once tries. She out-thinks the entire room instead, and watching it happen is basically our whole personality now. The oranges. The daggers she keeps everywhere. The scribe brain turned into a weapon. We never needed her indestructible — we needed her to be us, and win anyway. She did.

The mate · Xaden

Xaden is a complicated subject.

Her words, not ours. And no — he is not the brooding boy who's simply curious about her, so put that idea down. Their families are the exact reason this should never work, and that is precisely why it's the heat. The danger is real. The history is genuinely lethal. That IS the point — not despite it. We were never here for safe.

The cost · Resson

We're fine. We're not talking about it.

You know the one. Resson took someone we were not remotely prepared to lose. We laugh because at Basgiath you laugh or you don't get back up — and then a name comes up and the whole thing cracks open again. …anyway. Moving on.

The war · The lie inside Basgiath

The scribe who became the weapon.

The war college we'd bleed for is keeping the kind of secret that would end it — and she finds out the same moment we do. That's the turn. The girl raised to copy down the official story becomes the one aimed straight at the lie inside it. Fragile girl, meet weapon. We're still not over it.

You don't need the recap. But since we're both rereading anyway—

From scribe to weapon.

The setup is a setup: the general's fragile daughter, raised to copy down the official history, marched onto the parapet to die quietly. What nobody bet on — not the quadrant, not her mother, not even her — is that the scribe would out-survive all of it, bond two dragons instead of none, and turn the exact scholar's brain they trained on the page into the thing aimed straight at the lie the empire was built to hide. Three books, one line: fragile was never the weakness.

  1. 01

    The parapet

Conscription Day: the general marches her fragile scribe daughter onto a storm-slick parapet over a gorge to die quietly. She crosses it reciting facts to keep her hands steady — and lives, to everyone's inconvenience but ours.

  2. 02

    Threshing

She shields a small gold feathertail from cadets trying to kill it, and walks off the field bonded to two dragons at once — Tairn and Andarna — the first rider in recorded history to do it. The world's oldest rule breaks in an afternoon.

  3. 03

    The lightning

Her signet shows up fashionably late and arrives as forked lightning she rips out of the sky, burying Jack Barlowe under half a mountain mid-War-Games. (He does not, annoyingly, stay buried.)

  4. 04

    Athebyne → Resson

Sent past the wards to be quietly killed, the squad finds the truth Navarre buried: venin are real, wyverns are real, the war never ended. Resson takes Liam and nearly takes her — stabbed, poisoned, burning out — and she wakes three days later in Aretia, in a rebellion she didn't know existed.

  5. 05

    The wardstone

A thousand wyvern hit an unwarded Basgiath, and the wards need seven dragon breeds — Andarna is the secret seventh. Brennan mends the cracked stone, Violet pours raw power into it past burnout, and her mother spends her own life to finally light it. The iron flame burns black.

  6. 06

    Red rings

The same night, to keep fighting long enough to save her, Xaden draws power straight from the earth — and turns venin. The last thing she sees is the red ring around his eyes. The scribe who copied the official story is now the weapon aimed at the lie inside it.

  7. 07

    Onyx Storm

The war jumps off the map. She sails past the border hunting allies, a cure, and the rest of her father's research — poison craft finally turned to saving people instead of surviving them. Basgiath's buried lie is a continent-wide war now, and she's at the front of it.

Her dragons · The double bond

Two dragons. Yes, two — first rider in recorded history.

No rider in recorded history had bonded two dragons. She bonded a black one the size of a threat and a gold one nobody understood yet, and pulls power from both — which is exactly why the lightning lands the way it does.

  • Tairnblack, enormous — the lightning is his
  • Andarnagold, small — freezes time, hides a secret

We're Caffeine and Curses. The Library started as my design research — I can't put Violet on a shirt without knowing the silver in her hair runs from the tips, not the roots — so we keep the notes here where everyone can use them.
