Xaden Riorson

Xaden Riorson · The full story

The boy who damned himself.

Son of the man Violet's mother executed — the sworn enemy who became her protector, then her mate, then reached for the one power no rider is meant to touch, and turned himself into the thing they all fight.

Who he is · The marked one

Son of the Great Betrayer.

He inherited a dead father, a branded arm, and a war he never chose — the oldest of the rebellion's orphaned children, marked for a treason that wasn't his. So he did the only thing the situation allowed: put himself between all of them and the axe, and called it a deal. Every scar on his back is a name he decided to keep alive. We didn't stand a chance.

The mate · Violet

The dragons decided. The humans caught up.

Sgaeyl and Tairn are mates, which means Xaden and Violet physically cannot stay apart — the bond made the call and left them to sort out the small matter of his father, her mother, and a war between their families. It should never work. That is precisely why it wrecks us, every single time. We were never here for safe.

The mask · The second signet

The one he'd be executed for having.

The shadows, everyone knows. The inntinnsic — the signet that reads what you truly intend — is a death sentence in Navarre, so he buried it from the college, from his own people, from her. When it finally surfaces it lands less like a power and more like a wound, because he kept it from Violet too. We understood exactly why. We were still a little furious.

The turn · Venin

He chose her over his own soul.

At the end of Iron Flame, drained and watching her die, he reaches for the one power no rider is meant to touch and pulls it straight from the earth — the thing that makes venin — because losing her was never on the table. Then he tells her to fear him. The red rings say the rest. This is the twist the whole series pivots on, and it's his.

You don't need the recap. But since we're both rereading anyway—

From sworn enemy to the boy who damned himself.

Start here: he's the son of the man Violet's mother executed, and he spends chapter one deciding the parapet will save him the trouble of killing her himself. Everything after is the long unravelling of that — the sworn enemy who becomes the protector, the protector who becomes the mate, the mate who reaches for a power no rider is meant to touch and turns himself into the thing they've all been fighting, because the alternative was letting her die. Every wall he ever built, he built for someone else. The last one he tears down himself.

  1. 01

    The parapet

Third-year wingleader, and Violet's told he wants her dead — her mother executed his father, so it's fair. He reminds her of exactly that, then gestures at the drop and lets the bridge do his work. It doesn't. Worst plan he ever made.

  2. 02

    The shadows

His signet is dark made solid — he hides her in a tree with it, chokes eavesdroppers with it, and runs marked-ones meetings that are treason by definition. He carries an entire secret war under Basgiath and explains none of it. Obviously.

  3. 03

    What's on his back

The gym, the shirt coming off: a navy-blue dragon relic textured with raised silver lines she suddenly recognises as scars. A hundred and seven of them — his bargain to keep the marked children alive. Protector and hostage, same skin.

  4. 04

    Athebyne → Resson

Sent past the wards to be quietly disposed of, he finally lets the truth spill: venin are real, Navarre's been lying, and his people have been arming the fliers in secret. Resson is where it costs — Liam dies, and something in Xaden doesn't come back.

  5. 05

    Aretia

The rebellion has an address, and it's his — Riorson House, his father's war kept alive in the dark. He vouches for Violet to the council and pulls her all the way in. The one thing he still won't hand over is the second signet, and it nearly ends them.

  6. 06

    The turn

Battle of Basgiath, burning out against a venin, Violet a breath from dead. He severs his tether and pulls raw power straight from the earth — the exact thing that makes venin — because losing her was never on the table. Then he tells her to be afraid of him. Red rings around his eyes. Book closed. Us: not okay.

  7. 07

    Onyx Storm

Opens hours later, his eyes still scarlet, half venin and half rider, and the war he spent years hiding is now a continent-wide fight in the open. Whatever he is now, he's still hers — that's the part that levels us.

His signets · The known and the buried

Two signets. One he wields in the open. One that gets you executed.

Everyone at Basgiath knows the shadow-wielder — the dark that binds, chokes, and hides on command. Almost nobody knows the second one underneath it: a forbidden signet that reads the truth of what you intend, punishable by death on discovery. He buried it from the whole college. From her, too.

  • Shadowbinds, chokes, hides — the famous one
  • Inntinnsicreads intentions — a death sentence

Straight from the highlights

The lines we've reread more than we'll admit.

“These marks are swirls and slashes that feel more like a warning than a claiming.”

Fourth Wing — Rebecca Yarros

“the navy-blue relic of a dragon that sweeps from his waist to over both shoulders—textured intricately with raised silver lines I couldn't see from across the gym. Silver lines I instantly recognize as scars.”

Fourth Wing — Rebecca Yarros

“son of the Great Betrayer.”

Fourth Wing — Rebecca Yarros

“slow, lethal burn of scalding sexual tension.”

We're Caffeine and Curses. The Library started as my design research — I can't put Xaden on a shirt without knowing his relic starts at his left wrist and stops at his jawline — so we keep the notes here where everyone can use them. The pages are fan-made, not official; the licensed designs are in the shop.
